Lena Chappell: I won’t claim any one specific influence for this piece, but there are many! Everything from  the ending theme from Zelda 1, to Peaceful Days from Chrono Trigger, there’s a lot of melodic ideas taken from some of my favorite 8-and-16-bit games, all wrapped up in a super simple little tune.

Lena Chappelle: Every game needs a good forest theme. They’re always my personal favorites. From Super Mario RPG to Xenogears and Chrono Trigger, the forest themes always take the cake. For Super Adventure Box, I approached the Dark Forest’s main theme with an almost baroque style to it. The 8-bit sounds actually lend themselves quite well to emulating a harpsichord, so it seemed a natural fit.

Lena Chappelle: There’s something about stage complete themes that always encapsulates the experience of an oldschool platformer. It’s gotta be short, but also contain that little seed of victory that helps you celebrate the moment. For this one specifically, I took melodic elements from the Guild Wars theme, and fused them with a little injection of Bionic Commando’s classic snare drum map screen theme. Fun fact: I slipped in an additional reference into the bass line from a certain popular RPG series. Can you find it?

Guild Wars 2 - Super Adventure Box: Victory!

Lena Chappelle: You know the story: start out, World 1-1, everything is happy and peppy and exciting. That was exactly the kind of mood I went for with this piece. I started with the melody & thematic elements from one of the tracks from the Krytan region, as it had always managed to get itself stuck in my head. From there, the exuberance took over and led to its own additions to the theme.

Maclaine Diemer: Although not an 8-bit game, Street Fighter II has just as special a place in people's hearts as Mario and Zelda. The bonus stage in SAB is a nod to the car destruction bonus stage in Street Fighter II (E. Honda's Hundred Hand Slap, anyone?). I also wanted it to have a Double Dragon kind of vibe, because it's one of my favorite classic game soundtracks. This is a variation on the main Guild Wars 2 theme, given an appropriately rocking treatment.

Maclaine Diemer: This piece originally started out as the first "Dark Woods" theme, but it ended up being a little creepier than we wanted. Thankfully, it worked perfectly for the Kingdom Of Fungus. For this one, I wanted to go for a sparse, heavy Metroid vibe. I love the minimalism of that soundtrack, and how creepy sound effects are incorporated into each piece. Part of the melody is based on one of Jeremy Soule's Regrown ambient pieces. See if you can spot it.

Maclaine Diemer: Truly intrepid explorers will discover a secret hiding in the Dark Woods. When you're inside the warp worm, you bounce around like you're on a trampoline, so I gave this piece a calliope/carnival ride feel.

Maclaine Diemer: VICTORY IS OURS! How many of us wished we could have a real life Rytlock Brimstone come crashing into our living rooms to take us on an awesome adventure? Our young friend in the commercial probably regrets making that wish.

The cinematics team here at ArenaNet cooked this one up, and I think they did an incredible job. Savvy YouTubers will be able to track down the commercial that inspired it. We decided to amp it up a little bit, and that meant shredding guitars, awesome sunglasses, and F-16's. The 14 year old in me always loves getting a chance to break out some speedy licks, if only to make myself feel better about those countless hours sitting on the edge of my bed as a youth butchering Van Halen riffs.
