Chinabot celebrates its 4th anniversary with a new label compilation. Featuring Experimentalists and producers from across Asia, Tetra Hysteria Manifesto has a full spectrum of styles. 

Tetra Hysteria Manifesto is 14 tracks from many of the first artists affiliated with Chinabot, as well as showcasing new artists, including exclusive tracks from Korean musician Arexibo. Shangai-based producer Laughing Ears returns on track Black Swan, as does Jaeho Hwang in collaboration with his niece and nephew for a cathartic electronic lullaby and Kyoto based Seaketa returns with hyperactive arpeggios.

The compilation also features a collaboration between OHYUNG and Korean American luci liyou. Thai noise activist Pisitakun returns with a soundtrack to the 2010 Thai military crackdown, while French avant-garde cellist Vincent Laju and South Korean Samin Son collaborate on a fully improvised track that blurs the line between strings and groaning alien vocalisations, and Japanese King Rambo Sound showcases his dirty acid industrial dub.

New to Chinabot is Juan Arminandi, an experimental percussive stringed instrument builder from West Borneo whose commissions include Raja Kirik and Senyawa. He uses his music as a statement about the rampant ecological destruction of his native Pontianak. We also welcome psychedelic noise metal jams by the young Vietnamese band Rắn Cạp Đuôi to the label.

Tetra Hysteria Manifesto focuses on the number 4, a common tetraphobia which is considered to be bad luck in a lot of parts of Asia. Some companies avoid the use of number 4 in aircraft registrations, building blocks, and smartphone releases, skipping from version 3 to 5.

The release celebrates and plays with the fun idea of superstition and not skipping or avoiding the use of number 4. It symbolises a radical acceptance that some things are out of control, against the desire to control things that we may not necessarily have in our power. The future is uncertain. We live in a world surrounded by superstitions. One person’s belief is another person’s myth.

Every one of the artists featured here embrace the here and now, and what’s to come. The protest element from the 3 previous compilations is not limited to politics on this 4th edition.

After making waves in Seoul with her all-female DJ collective and her multimedia artwork, Arexibo is releasing her debut EP as a producer. 카운터! (Counter!) works upon her proven dancefloor sensibility, weaving in contemplative moments of ambient, minimal electronica alongside bold melodies and luscious synthwave.
Made by connecting and extending virtual synthesizers, this slippage between quiet granular textures, pretty icy minimalism and moments of musical extroversion frenetic rhythmic scenes are at the centre of 카운터! (Counter!). While tracks such as 쌍둥이자리 Gemini are frantic and trance-inspired, fin glides with the symphonic ease of an early Boards of Canada track. On 3, she creates a sense of nightmarish, childlike weirdness, recalling compositions by the 20th-century minimalists. In 𓆉))))   𓆉))), Sci Fi soundscapes meet obscure tuning systems.

“’Counter’ is a word that presupposes a pair,” says Arexibo, “and it also implies a balance of power. When a force of similar size pulls each other in opposite directions, the two are temporarily placed at a standstill. My attitude of producing and creating is no different from this balancing act.”

The release of 카운터! (Counter!) is accompanied by a music video for 𓆉))))   𓆉))), directed by Arexibo, a simple but moving single shot which recalls the early screen tests of Andy Warhol. “Through a high-speed photo shoot that borrowed the typical form of portrait photography, I thought ‘How about the audience stay at the vague boundary between pictures and videos for a while?’” says Arexibo of the video. About Arexibo, 
A mixed-media artist based in Seoul, Arexibo explores the relationship between image and actuality through camera images and sound. She is a quarter of the female DJ crew ‘BAZOOKAPO Seoul’, who organise music events in Seoul. As a musician, Arexibo concentrates on the ‘floor’ as a fluidic space, full of politics. She has been featured in Mixmag Korea and OBEY Korea. 카운터! (Counter!) is her first solo release as a producer.

"Intimate Ghosting", a compilation album featuring nine musicians from Japan and South Korea, is being newly introduced to the roster of the Netherlands/US-based record label Psychic Liberation. Under the curation of novelist and musician Jiyoung Wi, the album contains the works of Arexibo (KR), Arles (KR), bela (KR), Jiyoung Wi (KR), Joyul (KR), Kazumichi Komatsu (JP), Kenji (JP), Ultrafog (JP), and Yeong Die (KR). ‘Intimate Ghosting’ is a lucid invitation to the effervescente sonic field progressing throughout the experimental, left-field, ambient music communities of said regions. The album artwork is from Moon Bae, an artist working in the US and South Korea.
