Eggman expanded it from its original small size into a massive undersea tunnel connecting all the islands.  He also armed it with tons of security, so you're not gonna have a smooth time making it to the end.

The submerged brick walls Dr. Robotnik built when relaunching the Death Egg long ago finally fell apart, revealing Launch Base was built over underwater ruins.  What an unfortunate place for a giant space station to fall on.

Sonic's finally boarded the soaring ship. After landing, he feels...different. He can't seem to explain it, but it feels as if he was back on his home planet. "It must have something to do with the Little Planet's power", he says, "The ship is unaffected by the flow of time". Sonic decides not to waste any time and heads straight for the head of the ship hoping to find a sniveling slimy fat man waiting for him in the cockpit. Be careful, this place is no joke. It's the length of 5 ships combined, it's got weapons and traps set all over the place, it's pretty dang hot, and your really high up. I'm not sure if even Sonic could survive THAT fall. Watch your step!
