We beginnen met Patricio Wang, de componist.
Hij moest uit Chili vertrekken voor het repressieve Pinochet regime.

Deel 5. Valtonyc Vlucht uit Spanje | MuziekalsWapen 
Valtonyc moest uit Spanje vluchten vanwege zijn muziek. 
Valtonyc vertelt me dit in de Podcast serie ’Muziek als Wapen’. 

In het Freemuse rapport The State of Artistic Freedom 2019 staat Spanje in de toptien van de wereld van musici in gevangenschap. Er zijn nog 14 anderen naast Valtonyc. https://freemuse.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/saf-2019-online.pdf

Valtonyc vlucht in 2018 als hij hoort dat hij naar een antiterrorisme gevangenis afgevoerd zal worden. Hij zegt: “Ik moest 500 kilometer van huis en mocht met niemand contact hebben. Ik bedacht me, dat ik niet alleen in de gevangenis zou lijden, maar vooral onder het antiterrorisme regime. En dat voor een paar Rap liedjes, die ik maakte.” Zijn teksten zijn cynisch, met een knipoog.

Valtonyc wordt veroordeeld vanwege belediging van het Spaanse Koningshuis, schijnbaar ophemelen van terrorisme en doodsbedreigingen in zijn Raps. 
Hij besluit te vertrekken en gaat naar België om zo zijn zaak internationaal onder de aandacht te krijgen. Om een oordeel van het Europese Hof voor de Mensenrechten te kunnen krijgen. In Spanje ziet hij geen mogelijkheden. In België hoopt hij op onafhankelijke rechtspraak, die niet gestuurd wordt door politieke ideologie. België heeft een goede naam wat betreft de rechtspraak, zo zegt Valtonyc. Voor hem speelde ook mee, dat de politicus Puigdemont, net als Valtonyc ook een Catalaan, in België zijn asiel gezocht had. Zijn advocaat Meester Bekaert is ook de advocaat van Valtonyc. 
Vox een van de rechtse partijen in de Spaanse politiek wint veel stemmen, juist vanwege dit Catalaanse conflict. Vox is grote tegenstander van de Catalaanse onafhankelijkheidsbeweging. Zondag 28 april 2019 waren de verkiezingen in Spanje. Vox won meer dan 10% van de stemmen. Voor Valtonyc zal het niet uitmaken. Hij blijft in België in exil.

In maart 2018 zegt Amnesty International dat een Spaanse wet die "verheerlijking van het terrorisme verbiedt" een huiveringwekkende omgeving heeft gecreëerd waarin mensen bang zijn om alternatieve opvattingen te uiten of controversiële grappen te maken.

Ofwel:

'Tomorrow they will knock down the door of my house to put me in jail,” he wrote. “For some songs. Tomorrow Spain is going to make a fool of itself, once more. I’m not going to make it easy for them. Disobedience is legitimate and it’s an obligation when it comes to this fascist state. No one’s giving up here.'

Deel 5.VALTONYC Vlucht Uit Spanje | MuziekAlsWapen

Valtonyc's advocaat Meester Paul Bekaert is ongerust.

Op 15 maart 2017 heeft de Europese Unie een richtlijn uitgevaardigd voor al haar lidstaten. De nationale regeringen moeten vóór 8 september 2018 in hun eigen wetgeving wetten opnemen, waarin ‘het verheerlijken van terrorisme’ strafbaar wordt gesteld. Deze richtlijn kende ik nog niet en ik ben geschokt. De vrijheid van meningsuiting is in gevaar.

In België spreek ik daarover met Meester Paul Bekaert. Hij is de advocaat van de Spaanse Rapper Valtonyc. Die aan den lijve ondervond wat deze nieuwe wetten veroorzaken. In 2018 moest Valtonyc vluchten uit Spanje naar België vanwege zijn muziek en teksten. Hij werd veroordeeld voor ‘verheerlijking van terrorisme’. Spanje reageert heftig in dit proces en vervolgt de rapper louter voor wat hij zegt en heeft België om uitlevering gevraagd. De rechters in Gent peinzen daar niet over, Valtonyc is in België geen terrorist.

Nederland heeft dit dwingende Europese besluit nog niet uitgevoerd, België ook niet. Maar Spanje, Bulgarije en Hongarije hebben deze ‘verheerlijking van terrorisme’ wetgeving al wel in werking gesteld. Meester Paul Bekaert ziet een groot gevaar binnen heel Europa ontstaan, binnen de recht systemen en bij de vrijheid van expressie.

Spanje staat in 2019 op de wereldlijst van Freemuse hoog in de toptien wat betreft musici in gevangenschap. Freemuse geeft elk jaar een rapport uit over The State of the Artistic Expression.  Alleen Cuba heeft met 19 artiesten een hoger aantal. Censuur op Muziek vindt dus hier vlakbij in Europa plaats. Meester Paul Bekaert is ongerust. Terecht denk ik.

Part 5 | Valtonyc | Flight from Spain | Music as a Weapon

Valtonyc had to flee Spain because of his music. In Belgium he finds exil.

Spanish Rapper Valtonyc in the Podcast series "Music as Weapon". 

He flees in 2018 when he hears that he will be taken to an anti-terrorism prison. He says: “I had to go 500 kilometers from home and was not allowed to have contact with anyone. I thought that I would suffer not only in prison, but especially under the anti-terrorism regime. And that for a few Rap songs, which I made.” His lyrics are cynical, with a wink.

Valtonyc is convicted of insulting the Spanish Royal Family, seemingly praising terrorism and death threats in his Raps. He decides to leave and goes to Belgium in order to get his case under international attention. To be able to get a judgment from the European Court of Human Rights. 

He sees no possibilities in Spain. In Belgium, he hopes for independent justice, which is not guided by political ideology. 'Belgium has a good reputation when it comes to case law.', Valtonyc says. 

For him it was also important that the politician Puigdemont, just like Valtonyc also a Catalan, had sought his asylum in Belgium. Puigdemonts’ lawyer Master Bekaert is also the lawyer of Valtonyc.

In the elections in Spain on Sunday 28 April 2019 Vox won more than 10% of the votes. Vox is one of the right-wing parties in Spanish politics and is an opponent of the Catalan independence movement. It won't matter to Valtonyc. He remains in exil in Belgium.

In March 2018, Amnesty International says that a Spanish law "prohibiting the glorification of terrorism" has created a hair-raising environment in which people are afraid to express alternative views or make controversial jokes.

In the Freemuse report The State of Artistic Freedom 2019, Spain is in the top ten of the world of captive musicians. There are 14 others besides Valtonyc.

Translation:

5. VALTONYC in EXIL

In Belgium I speak with Valtonyc's lawyer, Master Paul Bekaert. Valtonyc, the rapper, was convicted for "glorification of terrorism." Spain merely prosecutes the rapper for what he says.  Condemns him and his music as if he were a terrorist. Belgium has been asked for extradition. The judges in Ghent do not ponder about that, Valtonyc is not a terrorist in Belgium.

On 15 March 2017, the European Union issued directive 541 for all its member states. National governments must incorporate laws into their own legislation, that make "glorifying terrorism" punishable. Spain, Bulgaria and Hungary, among others, have created and implemented laws. Belgium has not yet complied with the European directive.

Part 7: MUSIC & FREEDOM & BITTER STORIES – English
We spoke with Srirak Plipat, Freemuse director. And the mission Freemuse has; to unveil all the cases of artists at risk. Throughout his story we look into the bitter stories of Musicians who had to flee to Paris and Belgium, because of their music.

We spoke with Cheick Tidiane Seck. He had to flee Mali in the ’70’s and is now again worried about the situation in his country Mali. 
Just like the Chilean composer Patricio Wang who had to flee from Chili in the '70's, And Spanish Rapper Valtonyc had to go into exil very recently. The story of being banned for your music is a never ending story.

2. BITTER STORIES

In this podcast & animation project 'Music as Weapon' the musicians fight for their music and a life in freedom. The ban on music and the arrests of musicians all over the world, is a threat to our freedom. 
In this series I want to show the power of those musicians. Music is a force that makes those who are in power so scared that they act violently against musicians.

The musician knowingly takes risks to continue making their music while he knows that he risks being put behind bars, being tortured or even killed.

How can it happen that in my time musicians are confronted with this censorship and this violence again.

In dit podcast & animatie project 'Muziek als Wapen'  vechten de musici voor hun muziek en een leven in vrijheid. Het verbod op muziek en het arresteren van muzikanten is een bedreiging van onze vrijheid. 
In deze serie wil ik de kracht van deze muzikanten laten zien.  Een kracht, die machthebbers zo’n angst aanjaagt, dat ze gewelddadig tegen musici optreden. 

De muzikant neemt willens en wetens risico’s om zijn muziek te blijven maken, terwijl hij weet, dat hij achter de tralies wordt gezet, gemarteld of zelfs vermoord. 

Hoe kan het gebeuren, dat ook in mijn tijd musici weer met deze censuur en dit geweld geconfronteerd worden.

De podcast-serie 'Muziek als Wapen' is een logisch vervolg op mijn eerdere werk. Documentaires over de strijd om in vrijheid te overleven. In de film Mama Calle zijn het de straatkinderen die proberen te overleven.
In een latere documentaire Zonen van de Zee zijn het Galicische vissers die op zee moeten overleven. In Hou Vol! drie jonge jongens, mannen nu, die door muziek hun weg tot overleven vinden.
