I made this mix for people that don't understand what drum & bass is- this doesn't apply to most people on here.  I think that the sound design and speed are two things that people with zero exposure to this music struggle with.  Also, d&b is not for everyone- and that's fine.

Need for Mirrors makes trough tracks - his words.  Regardless of what he calls them, they bang in their own, special way.  Not too much energy, but not chill at all.  He releases music at a prolific rate- this is but a drop in the bucket.  He is wickedly consistent and I've yet to hear anything but quality from him.  Granted, my mixing probably doesn't do his music justice, but I tried.  🙃

Drum & Bass Sessions S04E08 - Manic/Depressive

I watched a lot of old drum & bass documentaries this weekend: Talkin' Headz, Valve Sound System, & some BBC specials.  Man, the issues they had with the scene at the start of the millennium are still present- Especially hearing Dillinja talk about people making "shit-cunt" records that sound like shrapnel...  So I chose some hard hitting tunes that fall into lots of categories, but I went hard as my mood dictates my mixing.  There are new cuts and old ones- but they are quality.
Big up to @slwdwndnb for his excellent Revenant EP on Eatbrain.  Wicked tracks all of them.
A lot of these tracks may not be new to you, but a lot are new to me.  There is no better feeling then hearing a killer track for the first time- it's an addiction.

Formed as a collaboration between Survival & Script- their d&b/production heritage stretches back beyond two decades. The songs are dark, deep, and possess a craft that few producers can match today.  The songs sound fresh but also have a timeless quality about them.

He has a distinct sound- often sounding stripped-down on first listen, but packed to the gills with clever sound design, fun drum programming, and a wicked ear for a vocal sample or two.

Mental health...  It's in the news, on your phone, in your head.  It's okay to not be fine all of the time.  It's okay to feel down or- it's okay to feel anything.  But feelings are transitory.  They will pass.  Radically accept whatever it is and move on to the next challenge.  If you know someone who is struggling- reach out.  Your effort could make all the difference in the world.  The people who need help the most are the least likely to ask for it or appear as though they need it.  😔
Wow- Season 5?!  I never could have imagined making this many mixes let alone people actually listening to them.  I am humbled by every listen and comment I receive. I know it takes time to write a comment or to listen to an hour-long mix.  There is an endless supply of music out there so the fact that someone chose to listen to my effort is remarkable.

I wanted to make this season special- dark, deep, and curated rather well...

There is some intense dark'n'heavy bass work from @angalardub- 'The Disease' will infect your ears.  @mahsiv delivers a wicked slice of bass pie with 'Strictly'.  It's going on a year old but will still knock your ear drums in.  @viruldnb's track 'Animal Instincts' might be five years old, but sounds fresh AF today.  @teejdnb delivers with the sonic delicacy that is 'Lunacy'- top fucking notch there.  I think there are three or four @resslekdnb tracks in here, each one a subtle banger with super-clean sound design.

The biggest of ups to all the producers making these tunes- us djays would be nothing without you all giving us something to play.

When I think about the sound of drum & bass, T>I's tracks are what I think about.  They are funky, fluid, street-level nasty, and catchy AF.  These are the sounds of the future and the best sounds from a hazy past.  Mat's remix of Zinc's Sharp Shooter is one for the ages- it slaps.  His work with Grid boss Turno, his EP with Trex on Metalheadz, his collab with Saxxon- all pristine and timeless.

You would be keen to think that Oli has been in the game for decades, but you would be wrong.  At barely a quarter of a century old he has had releases on plenty of major labels such as Grid and V Recordings. His bass lines are immediately noticeable, but he shifts and drifts through sounds and sub-genres with wicked precision.  Mr. Lewis is in this game for the long haul, and the scene is better for it.

Big up and a debt of gratitude to Oli himself for supporting this project and providing a plethora of unreleased tracks and dubs.  He's pure class through and through.

I had no idea how prolific of a producer he is- he makes top-notch, minimal drum & bass bangers, breaks tracks, and other electronic music.  The productions are always tight and on point.  While the tracks themselves may have a minimal aesthetic, they are very dense.  Also, his basses are wild.

Cadenzo @deluxe-83 should not be slept on either...  Several of his tracks make an appearance here, with 'Stoic Hook' being a dance floor WMD.  It's ridiculously well crafted and I can't wait to hear what 2024 has in store for him.

I love all forms of electronic music- and techno has been in my life since my formative years.  It's not a perfect mix, but there are some classic tunes in here.  Hopefully I did them and their creators a bit of justice.
