This is a documentary I made for BBC Radio 4, with Falling Tree Productions. It's about being young, being trans, and how we can all engage critically with the media we hear, read and see.

The sound of "redaction", standalone

This feature uses the natural sounds and rhythms of a watchmaker’s workshop to take listeners on a journey through time and space.

Horologist James Harris tells the stories of memorable timepieces he’s worked on, reveals the inner workings of a watch movement, and introduces us to objects that have the potential to live forever, or die tomorrow – depending on whether we choose to preserve them. 

This is the first assessed piece I made for my MA Radio course at Goldsmiths.

Time Travellers

This piece explores the feelings and experiences that go with using public bathrooms as a transgender person. 

It uses a rhythmic, broken storytelling style to take the listener on a sonic journey through some of the anxieties and personal impact that gendered bathrooms have on trans and gender non-conforming people.

I made a lot of the music in this piece. It also features the track 'Juliette' by Podington Bear. The song in the last section is called Open Your Eyes and it's by my band, Sparrow, which I play drums in.

The toilets at home are all gender neutral

I got the chance to produce an episode of BBC Radio 4's programme Don't Log Off. It's a show where presenter Alan Dein speaks to strangers from all over the world, and asks them about their lives and what they get up to.

Don't Log Off - The Road Less Travelled - BBC Radio 4

I made this episode of Tate's podcast, which explores how we should think about the link between mental health and creativity. It's presented by Billy Childish, and features a number of artists, a Tate curator and a psychologist specialising in arts and health. 

The podcast episode complements 'The EY exhibition: Van Gogh and Britain' at Tate Britain.

Me and my friend Cassius Adair collaborated on this piece for episode 1 of Antibody, a narrative audio series from The Dig (Jacobin magazine's podcast). Antibody is a COVID-19 series, and our piece looks at the UK and US healthcare systems, and how being trans under those systems has equipped us in certain ways for the current health crisis. 

It features Cass teaching me how to self-inject testosterone over Skype.

International Trans Person Helpline (by Arlie + Cass)

I attended this year's virtual Third Coast Festival (aka Third Place). At one point during it, Maya Goldberg-Safir shared a recording from an anonymous audio producer having an emotional, middle-of-the-night semi-breakdown over how hard she was finding it to produce podcasts over Google Meet during the pandemic. I loved the recording, I thought it was so funny but also captured this incredibly relatable feeling of despair that we've all experienced at times this year. 

So one Sunday evening, I made this remix of the recording. Afterwards, Maya introduced me to the anonymous producer. It turned out to be Erica Heilman, who makes a show called Rumble Strip in Vermont, USA. Luckily Erica loved my remix!
