The Guaranitic War (1754-1756) -- Colonial Age

The Treaty of Madrid (1750), which set the Spanish and Portuguese boundaries in South America, caused a confrontation between the Guarani natives and the Portuguese and Spanish soldiers in the south of Brazil. The Guarani lived in Sete Povos das Missões, east of the Uruguay River, a place named because of the presence of the Jesuit priests who formed settlements for catechizing the Indians.
Justifying their actions by claiming a legitimate right to ownership of the region, the primary indigenous guerrilla leader, the Guarani Indian Sepé Tiaraju, with the support of some Jesuits, announced the decision not to give in to the orders of the invaders. The fighting started when the Guarani Indians rebelled, refusing to leave their land and move to the right bank of the Uruguay river, thereby resisting the border demarcation imposed by the Treaty. This caused Portuguese and Spanish troops to be sent to fight the Guarani Indians.

The bravery of the natives, who used only arrows and rifles as weapons, was not enough to secure a victory against the Portuguese and Spanish cavalry and artillery forces. The Castilians coming from Argentina and Uruguay pushed forward through the South and the Portuguese troops sent from Rio de Janeiro attacked at the Jacuí River. The two armies joined at the border of Uruguay, starting the battle. In May 1756, after two years of battles the Guarani attacks came to an end, with the death of more than 1,500 natives. Today, in the city of San Gabriel, a five meter high wooden cross erected by the Jesuits shortly after the massacre, pays tribute to the lives lost. Even today there are continued conflicts between the Guarani and invaders.

Tratado de Madri (1750), que delimitava as fronteiras espanholas e portuguesas da America do Sul*, gerou o confronto entre índios Guaranis e soldados portugueses e espanhóis ocorrido no Sul do Brasil. Os Guaranis viviam em Sete Povos das Missões, a leste do rio Uruguai, local nomeado em consequência da chegada dos jesuítas e formação de aldeamentos para catequização dos índios.
O principal líder da guerrilha indígena, o guarani Sepé Tiaraju, juntamente com o apoio de alguns jesuítas, anunciaram a decisão de não ceder às ordens dos invasores, usando como justificativa o direito legítimo de serem donos da região desde os primórdios. A luta começou quando os Guaranis se rebelaram, recusando-se a abandonar suas terras e se transferir para a margem direita do rio Uruguai, resistindo à imposta demarcação de fronteiras. Em resposta, foram enviadas tropas portuguesas e espanholas para combatê-los.
A bravura dos índios, que usavam como armas somente flechas e espingardas, não foi suficiente para sua vitória contra as forças da cavalaria e artilharia portuguesa e espanhola. Os castelhanos vindos pela Argentina e Uruguai avançaram pelo Sul e os lusitanos enviados do Rio de Janeiro atacaram pelo Rio Jacuí. Os dois exércitos se juntaram na fronteira do Uruguai, iniciando a batalha. Em maio de 1756, após dois anos de batalhas, chegou ao fim a oposição guarani, com mais de 1.500 indígenas mortos. Hoje, na cidade de São Gabriel, a cruz de madeira com cinco metros de altura, erguida pelos padres jesuítas logo após o massacre, presta tributo às vidas ceifadas na guerrilha. Ainda hoje existem contendas entre os Guaranis e as nações invasoras.

Queen Mary Insane

D. Maria I de Portugual (1734-1816) - Colonial Age

The church was part of the project to colonize Brazil. The church served as an administrative agency of the State, helping it keep the values of the apostolic doctrine in favor of the subordination of the people to the Portuguese crown.

In threatening letters, Queen Maria I demanded that "from the early years all should keep inviolable fidelity to S. Majesty, pray to God for her, obey her authority and comply with its laws." The Queen of Portugal defended catechesis as a means of social inclusion of the indigenous peoples, charging governors to exert all their efforts to bring the Indians "knowledge of religion, to change their habits into other more human, and more useful for their own conservation ."

Once she had disembarked in Brazil with the royal family to escape Napoleon, the Queen screamed in fear of demons surrounding her. This incident earned her the nickname "Queen Maria I, the Mad." There are rumors that relate her "madness" with a mental illness manifested after the deaths of her husband and her eldest son, whom she allegedly refused to vaccinate against variola because of her religious beliefs.
Damaging acts enacted by Queen Maria I such as the prohibition of manufacturing in the Portuguese colony and heavy taxation on gold from mining efforts served as a trigger for riots and prompted the Minas Gerais Conspiracy.

A Igreja fazia parte do projeto de colonização do território brasileiro, como um órgão administrativo do Estado, auxiliando-o a manter os valores apostólicos doutrinários em favor da subordinação do povo à Coroa portuguesa.
Em tom ameaçador, a rainha D. Maria I, exigia por cartas que "desde os primeiros anos que devem guardar inviolável fidelidade a S. Majestade, rogar a Deus por ela, obedecer a sua autoridade e cumprir as suas leis". A rainha de Portugal defendia a catequese como meio de inclusão social dos indígenas, cobrando de governadores todos os seus esforços para levarem os índios "ao conhecimento da religião, para mudar os seus costumes em outros mais humanos, e mais úteis para a sua própria conservação".
No Brasil, quando desembarcava com a família real, que fugia de Napoleão, ela gritava com medo de demônios que a cercavam. Este incidente lhe valeu o apelido de "Rainha Maira I, a Louca". Existem histórias que relacionam sua loucura com uma doença mental manifestada após as mortes de seu marido e, logo a seguir, de seu filho primogênito, o qual supostamente ela recusou vacinar contra varíola, devido às suas crenças religiosas. Atos inconsequentes desta Princesa do Brasil, como a proibição da produção de manufaturas na colônia e dos privilégios portugueses na exploração de ouro serviram de estopim para revoltas, como a Inconfidência Mineira.

ARMAHDA - Queen Mary Insane

The Canudos War (1896-1897) - Republican Government of Prudente José de Morais e Barros. The massacre of the Canudos War was the result of unfortunate political and religious intolerance.
On November 19, 1896, followers of Antonio Vicente Mendes Maciel, the "Conselheiro" [The Counselor], were on their way to Juazeiro on the Uauá road for a trade and peace mission. Many chanted the Kyrie and carried the banner of the Divine Holy Spirit. They had the mission of seeking a load of wood, already paid for but not delivered, to cover the temple of the village of Canudos. The law judge Arlindo Leoni, an old enemy of the "Conselheiro", took advantage of the issue of buying wood to retaliate, convincing the trader in charge of selling the wood to refrain from delivering the order, thus justifying the pilgrimage of the followers. Taking advantage of the tense situation that had developed, Leoni sent telegrams to the Governor of Bahia, Luis Viana, informing him and requesting that action be taken against a possible invasion of followers of the "Conselheiro," a partisan of the monarchy and an insurgent against Vatican "ad conditorem canonum". The pilgrims were attacked by the troops of the republic, who murdered more than one hundred followers who tried to defend themselves as best they could with primitive weapons manufactured by themselves such as sickles, stingers, daggers and old blunderbusses that failed to fire when they were needed the most. This was the origin of the first expedition against Canudos. This was not the only republican expedition against Canudos which, along with others, tainted the History of Brazil with blood.
This attack on individual freedom had its roots in the persecution of the Roman Catholic Church against the religious leader Antonio Conselheiro. He created a village of Puritans, who worked hard for their way of life within a new concept of tribal cooperatives. In addition to being a leader, Conselheiro was a builder of dams, walls, cemeteries and churches, using what the dry lands [caatingas] could provide, with their discouraging soil and burning climate.

ARMAHDA - Canudos

The Armada Revolt (1893) - Republican Government of Floriano Vieira Peixoto

Marshall Floriano Peixoto betrayed the Empire. By means of a constitutional provision, thirteen officers sent a Manifesto to President Floriano Peixoto demanding new elections. Floriano ordered the immediate arrest of these leaders.
It was clear that the Navy, Armada, had little prestige when compared to the army. This triggered the beginning of the Revolt.

Led by Custodio de Melo, former Minister of the Navy, several armored units entered into conflict with the army on September 13, 1893, in Niterói. Without any chance of victory, the armed units turned to the south of the country where they tried unsuccessfully to win the support of the Southerners.

In March 1894, the president curbed the movement with the help of North-American freebooters and their fleet of ships from New York, overcoming the Brazilian armed rebels. Ironically, when victory against the insurgents was confirmed, the anthem heard was the English one "Long live the Queen".

The title track of the band has the lyrics written in the 1st person representing the Armada with the participation of famous Brazilian voice talent Silvio Navas, who narrates in the 1st person the President Floriano Peixoto's speech.

Revolta Armada (1893) - Governo Republicano de Floriano Vieira Peixoto

O Marechal Floriano Peixoto traiu o Império. Por meio de um dispositivo constitucional, treze oficiais enviaram uma Carta-Manifesto ao então presidente da República Floriano Peixoto. Essa carta exigia convocação de novas eleições. Floriano ordenou a prisão imediata destes líderes.

Era nítido o pequeno prestígio da Armada (Marinha) em relação ao exército. Assim teve inicio a Revolta.

Líderados por Custódio de Melo, antigo ministro da Marinha, a artilharia entrou em conflito com o exército no dia 13 de setembro de 1893 em Niterói. Sem chance de vitória, a Armada se dirigiu ao sul do país onde tentou inutilmente o apoio dos sulistas.

Em março de 1894, o presidente  conteve o movimento através da ajuda da pior escória de filibusteiros americanos e da sua frota de navios vindos de Nova York. Ironicamente, quando a vitória foi confirmada, foi ouvido o hino inglês "Long Live the Queen".

A faixa-título da banda tem a letra escrita em 1ªpessoa representando a Armada e conta com a participação do famoso dublador brasileiro Silvio Navas, que narra em 1ªpessoa as ordens de Floriano Peixoto.

Ammo bunker explosion (23/04/1958) -- Republican Government of Juscelino Kubitschek

On April 23, 1958, there were explosions in the storerooms of the Central Depot of Armaments and Ammunition of the Army, located in Deodoro, district of the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Deodoro´s ammo bunker represented the largest ammunition depot in South America.

In an act of heroism, the captain of cavalry, Odilton Medrado Castello Branco, together with 3 other officers, adapted the cannon of a 35 ton General Grant tank with a hose and threw water toward the explosions flooding the surrounding bunkers to avoid the explosion of other depots. The cavalry troops did not disband, but were in charge of monitoring approximately 1,200 regiment horses.

The displacement of air produced by repeated bursts of grenades had an impact on many neighborhoods, even the more distant ones, such as Leblon and Copacabana. In Grajaú and Vila Isabel there were cracks in the plaster walls of several houses, and many windows were broken. The neighborhoods around the Deodoro Depot had smashed walls, windows shattered and roofs destroyed. Many wrecks were scattered around Bandeiras avenue.

There were reports that the explosions were caused by acts of a sorcerer's ritual, "macumba", which caused fire to spread rapidly through dry grass entering the region of bunkers, causing even his death.

Paióis de Deodoro - 23/04/1958 -- domingo -- RJ -- Governo republicano de Juscelino Kubitschek

Explosões nos paióis do Depósito Central de Armamento e Munição do Exército, situado em Deodoro, bairro da Zona Oeste do Rio de Janeiro, em 23 de abril de 1958. Os paióis de Deodoro representavam o maior depósito de munições da américa do sul.
Cel. Odilton Medrado Castello Branco, com um tanque General Grant, 35 toneladas, adaptado com canhão d´água com mangueiras emendadas do corpo de bombeiros enfrentou as explosões inundando os paióis do entorno para não explodirem, junto com mais 3 oficiais, em ato de heroísmo. As tropas da cavalaria não debandaram, sendo encarregadas de controlar os cerca de 1.200 cavalos do regimento.
Os deslocamentos de ar produzidos pelos repetidos estouros das granadas tiveram reflexos em muitos bairros, mesmo os mais distantes, como Leblon e Copacabana. No Grajaú e em Vila Isabel ocorreram rachaduras no reboco das paredes de diversas casas, e muitas vidraças foram quebradas. Os bairros limítrofes a Deodoro tinham aspecto de cidades bombardeadas: paredes arrebentadas, vidraças estraçalhadas, telhados destruídos. Muitos destroços ficaram espalhados pela Avenida das Bandeiras.
Há relatos de que as explosões foram causadas por atos de um feiticeiro, cujo ritual, uma macumba, espalhou fogo pelo mato seco e adentrou a região dos paióis, causando, inclusive, sua morte.
