Barbat Ensemble represents a new generation of Iranian musicians who bring a renewed breath to the ancestral music of Persia through their original compositions and contemporary interpretations.
Formed by instrumentalists and vocalists descending from highly respected musical families of Northern Iran, the ensemble embodies both the heritage and the evolving expression of Persian music.

Having relocated to Europe, the members of Barbat Ensemble carry with them the sonic traditions, modal structures, and improvisational aesthetics of their homeland, while simultaneously absorbing the artistic languages they encounter through travel and collaboration. Their work stands at the intersection of classical Persian music and regional folk traditions, enriched with subtle influences from Western chamber music, contemporary composition, and global improvisational practices.

Through their performances, Barbat Ensemble offers audiences an intimate experience of musical dialogue—where melody, texture, and rhythm unfold organically and collectively. Their sound is marked by a refined balance of virtuosity and restraint, allowing each instrument to contribute its voice to a shared narrative.

This live performance, recorded on 18 November 2018 at Philharmonie Köln, presents a vivid portrait of the ensemble’s musical identity—rooted in tradition yet shaped by continuous artistic discovery.
