HD Radiomiddag 27-03-2014

This first mix of two was supposed to be part of the promotion of my album "From a 20th Century Box" which was released on U-TRAX last year. The second mix I did got published here on Soundcloud by Zarabat (https://on.soundcloud.com/9jxJH). 
This is the other one and I'll post it myself: probably too weird for promotion I guess ;)

    First off, I'm no DJ: last time I spinned records was maybe at a high school-party mid 80's. And aside from being fairly active in the scene early nineties, I was always more of a knob fiddler than a collector of records and was more focused on sounds than styles.

    Today I work as a sound engineer, mostly for Dutch Public Radio and have hardly any time left to listen, let alone work on music. The closest I get is listening to the White Noise-podcast by Dave Clarke.
    So instead of trying to be hip and happening with the freshest tracks, I decided to put together a mix of some of the tracks that have inspired me. So there definitely is hip-hop in there as well, since well before house was born, this was the music from the street and soon, also a vehicle for spreading the word, crossing over to other genres to also convey politically motivated messages: groups like Tackhead, Meat Beat Manifesto and Consolidated, to eventually become EBM. This where I found my home eventually and some of my tracks of that time still reflect that.

    The very first record I made as Voltage Control was in 1989 which was on the brink of the arrival of acid to The Netherlands and thus became a crossover between the two styles.
    So this mix is rather eclectic and forgive me for not having the tracks perfectly mixed: I’m a master in software, but have never learned to work with DJ-software. Still I hope 'younger' listeners can appreciate what many founders have done before EDM took off. Guess I’m getting old ;-)

Radiodocumentaire "Spelen & Slikken" voor Holland Doc, uitgezonden op 21 maart 2010

Bühnevrees als een zwarte gier die in je nek springt, doodsangst waar je van over je nek gaat. Zo omschrijven artiesten hun podiumangst. De meesten kennen het. Maar wat te doen als de spanning te hoog oploopt? In 2009 opende 's werelds eerste 'Muziekpoli' haar deuren in Leiden. In krap een jaar tijd hadden 40 patiënten zich gemeld bij psychiater Esther van Fenema, zelf ook violiste.
Er rust een enorm taboe op dit onderwerp, veel artiesten vinden dat spanning erbij hoort en dat je maar een ander vak moet kiezen als je er niet tegen kan. En toegeven dat je aan bètablokkers zit om de spanning te onderdrukken is helemaal ‘not done’. Het bewijs: slechts één van de 40 patiënten wilde (vooralsnog anoniem) hierover geïnterviewd worden. Een rondgang langs musici, acteurs en performers – waaronder Egon Kracht, Peter Douglas, Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Haye van der Heyden, e.a. – die openhartig praten over hun podiumvrees. Over hoogspanning achter de coulissen en ontboezemingen op de couch.

Arno started tape music in the early '80's and evolved to electronic music. First as the EBM-duo Voltage Control (2 EP's and one CD-album on Antler) and later as one of the first techno-artists in The Netherlands with some EP's on Djax-Up-Beats, as part of Random XS and Urban Electro and solo as Spasms. He turned away from techno to more experiMental stuff on his album 'Fuzzy Logic' and migrated to the German Mille Plateaux-label which released the award-winning AeroSon and two tracks on compilations.
He has worked as an editor and producer for Dutch National Radio 1,4 and 6 on which he hosted his own radioshow called Folio.
Currently he composes in 5.1 surround  and (as the one-man company Tape TV Productions) edits, mixes and masters all kinds of projects from the no-budget fine art to high profile and cutting edge multimedia.
Also he works as a media artist worldwide.
