AROHA is a genre-defying artist whose passion for sharing music has been with her since childhood. From working part-time in a record store during high school to hosting radio shows at just 19, music has always been at the heart of her life. Known for her diverse, boundary-pushing sound, AROHA finds herself equally at home behind the decks at an intimate underground club or commanding a massive festival stage.

With 27 years of experience—starting with her radio career and transitioning into live performances over the past 20 years—AROHA has always focused on connecting with her audience through rhythm and sound. She describes her approach as "speaking another language," one where the crowd’s energy and collective vibe dictate the flow of the night. There's nothing quite like the rush of seeing someone catch the groove or feeling the whole room shift when the right track drops.

Influenced by artists who transcend genres and refuse to be boxed in, AROHA draws inspiration from the likes of Jamie xx, Joy Orbison, Grace Jones, Dixon, Skream, Björk, Julio Bashmore, and Claude VonStroke. Her style is a direct reflection of her eclectic musical upbringing—raised on punk with her mum’s collection of Iggy Pop, The Clash, and Talking Heads, her tastes evolved into a love for electronic music, drawing heavily from Björk, Nine Inch Nails, and Tricky.

Her unique approach to DJing was shaped by her first mentor, Jason Rockpig, who taught her the art of beatmatching with dub techno. With guidance like, “People will remember your tune selection more than your mixing,” AROHA has made a career out of keeping her sets unpredictable and exciting, consistently surprising listeners with tracks that blend raw energy, electronic textures, and just the right touch of subversive punk.

Career highlights include playing for massive crowds at events like WOMADelaide in 2022, which marked a pivotal moment in her career. Infusing her Māori heritage into her set and receiving an incredible crowd response, that performance launched her into the spotlight. She has since gone on to support big names like Disclosure, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and even Grace Jones, solidifying her place among the stars of electronic music.

When curating a mix, AROHA is all about authenticity. She pushes the boundaries of house music, adding her own flavor and a little bit of "weirdness" for good measure. As she puts it, “People connect with you because of your taste—because you do what you want.” That mindset is at the heart of her unforgettable sets.

With an ear for surprises, an eye for innovation, and an unrelenting desire to share music that excites her, AROHA continues to inspire, challenge, and entertain listeners with every beat she drops.

Recorded live at Pitch Music & Arts in March 2024, where I opened the main stage in the middle of extreme heat and bushfire risk. My set was cut short, but I still poured everything into it.

This mix features music from Māori, Palestinian, Indigenous, Black and queer artists, across genres, with the intention of creating connection and joy.
