Thank you for redirecting so that he could try to answer your question. But, more specifically, how and why did he decide to leave out the beatings (of women) by Dre, etc.? Comparing the omission of a narrative that centers the communities of black people (men and women) in Selma over a focus on LBJ is not comparable to Gray's omission of even a brief narrative mention (say 10 secs) about the violence against women perpetrated by Dre, especially since viewers/audiences might then make a narrative connection between the lyrics in their raps and the personal lives of these boys/men. It's a gross omission, easily Googled, if not remembered, and it reeks of collusion. Unlike your work in Selma, Gray's "directorial choices" are not about centering a narrative of the voices of black people (both men and women). I wonder whether he had as much control over that narrative as he imagines here and elsewhere. To put it another way: Would Dre and Cube let him tell that story?

One of my favorite directors and this movie was incredible but he putting way too much effort in trying to deflect that question.

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast interview with @FGaryGray and @AVAETC. I am in the mist of pre-production on a TV project, and the process of selecting a cast, the chemistry, the harmony needed to make it fresh, fun, and improvisational is a daunting task at best. I agree that at this more mature age, my life experiences and knowledge are beneficial to my writing, directing and producing. I have to say, I've been following F. Gary Gray's career since 'Fridays' and 'Set it off" one reason, he always brings a project in under budget and on time, and you never see any 'loose threads' in his films.

I think it's an issue of resposibility across the board...Nobody needs music to raise their children....all valid points by Mr. Gray. But "Art affects and imitates life!"
