An audio documentary rooted in my fascination and amazement with words and how they remain fundamental in our own structures of assimilation and understanding.

I engaged with students and a dear friend of mine, Wessley Thring (who adores words as much as I wish I could), at the University of Cape Town to gain insight into how they feel about the power of words and what kinds of outlets poetry provides.

Poems featured are by Wessley, myself and include the last stanza of Sir Walter Raleigh's The Nymph's Reply to the Shepard.

the power of words: a sit-down with @thringthings

FLUENT sits down with Thuli
Following her upbringing in Kimberley(South Africa), Thuli moved to Cape Town in 2015 to complete her tertiary studies while she currently works in the Cape Town events and nightlife industry. 
She reflects on her ability to code switch between Tswana, English and Afrikaans over and above switching between accents and dialects in navigating her way through different spaces and with different people.

This forms part of the FLUENT project, which seeks to explore code switching amongst people of colour in Cape Town and the fluidity of identity is creates.

Code Switching: ¨the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation.¨
[E.g. changing one's ´accent´/ way of speaking in different situations]
