My track on the Amniote x Ute Fundraiser Compilation. 
All the proceeds will be donated to The Red Van: a volunteer-run NGO working with harm reduction and human rights for street based sex workers in Copenhagen.

"Sidewinder" is my reptilian alias for Mama Snake's label, Amniote Editions. All artists are invited to create their own reptilian alter ego for the project. My last release there was the "Ripple Effect" EP in 2019. I first met her in Autumn 2018 in Copenhagen to play at Jolene, as well as attend in-person sessions for the mastering+lacquer cut for the record. We mastered with Joel at Six Bit Deep and cut the lacquer with Hari (HVAD) at Kommunal Dubplate. Proper stuff. Few weeks later we shared the lineup on Sustain Release Festival in NYC, it was all a blast. 

I had the pleasure to first meet the Ute crew in Spring 2019, playing their club night at Blå in Oslo. Already had a good feeling when they picked me up from the airport and were playing Global Communication while driving through misty evergreen trees. Oslo freakishly reminded me a lot of my hometown of Seattle, just a bit less mountainous and hilly. That summer, we shared a lineup in Säule Berghain and at the end of season I was invited to play at one of their forest parties (bless) alongside their residents and Alpha Tracks - it was a really fun run! :~)

Sidewinder aka D.Dan - Can You Float? [Amniote x Ute Compilation]

Although based in Berlin for several years, Dustin Zahn has continued to exert influence over the fertile but steadfastly underground Minneapolis techno scene as part of the Intellephunk collective whilst cultivating a worldwide rep via releases for Blueprint, Token and his own Enemy Records. The ‘Gain of Function’ LP sees Zahn channelling the groove-fuelled techno of the late ’90s and early ’00s and shaping eight powerful but funky contemporary techno tracks that display the decades of experience under his belt. 

Forged from a series of live jams with two drum machines and two synths, the album is a refined collection of raw, purist techno brilliance. Across the A-side ‘Tell Me About Paradise’ brings shimmering staccato chops under bright and airy percussion before ‘Tangie Groove’ picks up the pace with floating pads, vocal slices, and a rumbling bassline. On ‘Lucid Dreams’, scattered percussion plays with hypnotic synth licks, while ‘Smoking in Silence’ sees off-kilter leads dancing between emotive vocals and evolving drum loops.

Opening the second disc is the deep and shuffling ‘Crimson Cheeks’, with trance-inducing samples nestled between sharp drum hits and rolling synthesis, and ‘Days Like These’ takes a darker turn as twinkling arps and droning pads carry the track. ‘Shark Rodeo’ featuring Jeremy Black mangles samples into a dense rolling affair, before closing number ‘Next Level Looseness’ drops the 4/4 pattern for a raucous club track, combining oddball sound sources and unruly production techniques for a trippy finish to the album. 

Since the late ’90s, Zahn’s hypnotic and driving techno has consistently caught the ears of top DJs and labels worldwide, with anyone catching his marathon sets at the likes of Berghain exposed to expansive sets. In addition to his techno-heavy catalogue and DJing prowess, Zahn has lent production and engineering skills to bands and singers, recently working with Poliça and on Carm’s Pitchfork approved eponymous album. Beyond this, his vital work with Intellephunk includes the nearly two decades long running Communion after-hours events, cementing his invaluable contributions to the scene.

Consistently reliable in its turnout of high quality techno, Mark Broom’s Beard Man opened the year with another stamp of approval from BBC Radio 1’s B.Traits when she made the imprint her “Label Mates” in January and a second EP from Germany’s Patrik Carrera, including a superb remix by Makaton (Rodz-Konez / Blueprint) in February. Now the king of the snakes, Mr Mark Broom heads into spring with his ‘Snake Eyes EP’.

‘Snake Eyes’ and ‘Witch’ open the EP in classic Broom production style. Immediately recognisable for vigorous peak-time action, the tracks are infused with tough tech funk and contagious grooves that make it clear why someone like Robert Hood has always been a constant supporter of his work.

The original version of ‘Upside Down’ was first released on Pure Plastic back in 2000. Here, the track receives two reworkings. The first is from Tabernacle and Mathematics man, John Heckle in his Head Front Panel guise. A fitting choice as Heckle enhances the raw Chicago-esque style of the original. The second comes from Mark himself with a deeper 2017 Mix that updates this classic track for a new audience of fans.

The Alien Sound Trax boss, who has previously appeared on the likes of World Unknown, Suara, and UNCAGE, makes his mark on Radio Slave’s imprint with the hard-hitting and distinct ‘Worldwide Ravers EP’.
Deeply infused with the unmistakable sound of the UK, Nasa draws from his broad range of influences for his EP, distilling elements of Jungle, Rave, and Hardcore into his own brand of meticulously crafted, difficult-to-pigeonhole techno.

Opener ‘Dubska’, clocking in at over ten minutes long, is a relentless and fast-paced affair, bubbling along at breakneck speed with the help of classic vocal samples, while ‘World Dance (Rinse Out Mix)’ fuses breakbeats and droning bass to create a high energy track that twists and turns at 140bpm.

Field recordings of birds in ‘Summertime Raving In London’ sit alongside classic drum kits and emotive chords while living up to its titular character. ‘Ninja Tune’ and ‘Gabrielle Gabacid’, only available digitally, see Nasa going for the jugular, applying smatterings of classic acid bass and ruthless drums across both tracks to see out the release in fine style.
