Battle Ave is an indie rock band formed in upstate New York in 2009. While living in Montreal, songwriter Jesse Alexander was asked to come down & play a show at SUNY Purchase, but his band had broken up when he left the country, so he teamed up with long-time collaborator Samantha Niss to write 5 meandering, fuzzy 90's alt-rock epics. When he moved back, 5 turned to 10, the band filled out, and they released their debut "War Paint" in 2011, a loud and cathartic rollercoaster, engineered and produced by the wise sage Kevin McMahon (SWANS, Titus Andronicus, The Walkmen).

The past few years have been a period of hibernation & occasional touring for the band, with an array of lineup changes and some drastic shifts in sound and direction. Most of the time was spent with McMahon in the studio, crafting a very different batch of music for their sophomore album; subtle, emotive, and atmospheric indie songs. The current lineup is Alexander on guitar and vocals, Sam Mintzer on bass, Samantha Niss on drums, Sam Nixon on keys, and Adam Stoutenburgh on guitar.

Part two and it’s on to someone who unless you’ve spent hours trawling Bandcamp, you probably won’t have heard of. Double Denim is the moniker of Bristol-based Tom Kelly. Somewhere (in what we can only assume is a tiny damp room) Tom has been carefully crafting, sun-kissed, lo-fi bedroom pop whilst (we’re assuming here too) digesting the entire Captured Tracks discography.

In our singles clubs we’ve always tried to focus on mixing completely new bands alongside some of our favourites (we’ve got lots of these lined up this time) which means we’ve given bands such as Splashh, Fake Laugh  and Joey Fourr their first proper releases. Hopefully this is just the start for Double Denim and we’ll hear lots more soon.

Summer Day

Auckland's DHDFDs are a force of nature. Explosive, frenetic and utterly unpredictable; their live shows have become the stuff of legend. After nearly seven years together they finally have an album ready to be unveiled and a UK/Europe/USA tour on the way.

The DHDFDs burst onto the Auckland scene with a bang in 2005, while still in their teens. Since then they have supported the Black Lips, toured Japan with the King Brothers and graced the stage at Big Day Out.­­­­­­ They even had gossip columnist Bridget Saunders had snarl in the Sunday Star Times that the DHDFDs were "the worst", forcing fashionistas to leave some lame gig "with their hands over their ears". Releasing the Pastor of Muppets EP in 2006 and following up with Fromage Du Pouvior in 2008 (released through Mole Music) the band have been through a couple of line-up changes, but they are back and armed with a brand spanking new album. French Fries was recorded and mixed in March of last year by Kody Nielson (The Mint Chicks, Bic Runga) and mastered by local maestro Nick Roughan (Tourettes, Street Chant, Lost Rockets).

French Fries is a thirty minute blitzkrieg of unstoppable rhythms and scuzzy guitars, topped off by Scot Brown's signature howl. Managing to fit an epic thirteen tracks into a plastic disc that runs just short of thirty minutes the DHDFDs guarantee more value for money than a happy meal; French Fries is a frenetic garage rock gem that's guaranteed to bring joy to your ears.
