Estates play a crucial role in protecting an artist’s vision and keeping their works in the public eye. This is a multifaceted job that includes preserving archives, facilitating discourse and initiating exhibitions, amongst others. In this panel, we get first-hand accounts from family representatives managing artist estates, and see if there are best practices that can be instructive for legacy planning.

Ian's Research Club 08: Tina Baum and Phoebe Scott

Nadya speaks with Wang Zineng, Founder, Art Agenda, S.E.A. and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Asia at Bonhams. In this conversation, they discuss the auction landscape in Southeast Asia, the rapid rise of the regional art market from the mid-2000s, and how houses keep nimble to cater to increasingly eclectic tastes of collectors.

Nadya speaks with Patrick Flores, Artistic Director, Singapore Biennale 2019, Professor of Art Studies at the Department of Art Studies at the University of the Philippines and Curator of the Vargas Museum in Manila. In this conversation, they discuss how biennales can both educate and entertain, the simultaneous importance and difficulty of being critical about art in the region, and the need to expand Southeast Asia as a framework in curating and writing.

Episode 2: Patrick Flores on Biennales

Nadya speaks with Tom Tandio, Fair Director, Art Jakarta, Founder of IndoArtNow Foundation and art collector. In this conversation, they discuss Tom’s journey as an art collector, including his interactions with fellow collectors, as well as why (and how) he collects installation and performance art. They also talk about IndoArtNow Foundation ten years on, and the importance of documenting the work of Indonesian artists. Lastly, they look back at what the refreshed Art Jakarta achieved in 2019, and forward to what the next edition will bring.

Episode 3: Tom Tandio on Art Fairs

Nadya Wang speaks with Emi Eu, Executive Director of STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery and Project Director, S.E.A. Focus.  They discuss the successful STPI artist residency programme that has welcomed over a hundred artists, the non-profit organisation’s role as part of the Visual Arts Cluster, as well as the upcoming SEA Focus and how it will shine a spotlight on the regional art landscape.

Episode 4: Emi Eu on STPI and S.E.A. Focus

Nadya speaks with Zaki Jumahri, previously Senior Legal Counsel at the National Heritage Board (Singapore). In this conversation, they discuss the nascent state of art law in Southeast Asia and the importance for everyone in the regional art community – from an artist to a collector –  to possess a basic understanding of art law. They go through the steps artists can take to protect their intellectual property, and how collectors can minimise risks when investing in an artwork.

Episode 5: Zaki Jumahri on Art Law

How will public art institutions engage with audiences?
The unprecedented shutdown of museums and other public art institutions worldwide has proven a major challenge to their raison d’être. Our panel of institutional directors and curators will speak about the challenges they face, measures and inventive strategies they have put in place to continue engaging with their audiences, and the futures of their respective institutions.
