Theatrical Spectacle

PREMIERE: Androm - Goths (Unified Method Remix) [KLT05]

Keepsakes, the alias of British-New Zealand producer and DJ James Barrett, has been a strong and distinctive voice in techno since rising to fame through his Stygian Concrete Works and Weapons Grade Manic EPs back in 2014. Since then he has showcased his powerful and menacing, yet often cheeky and playful, productions on influential labels including South London Analogue Material, Perc Trax, MORD, and Mindcut.

Furthermore, he founded the Haven club night alongside Jaded Nineties Raver in Tāmaki Maraukau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) in 2015 - aiming to introduce clubbers to the experimental and harder side of techno in a city completely devoid of this music. In 2018 Haven also expanded into a vinyl-focused record label - going on to release many leading international artists including VTSS, Tommy Holohan, New Frames, Peder Mannerfelt, Ayarcana, Ansome, and Ryan James Ford, as well as becoming the main home for Barrett’s own productions.

Now located in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa (Christchurch, New Zealand) - following several years in Berlin hitting the European club circuit - he is focused on bringing his tough and eclectic sound to dance floors worldwide, with regular appearances at international techno institutions providing a platform for his formidable DJ sets.

What's a lockdown good for? If any, it allows for time to be invested into making music. For Jehra, his Temasa Geç EP was the result: an outburst, a release of compressed emotions from the last two years that had seen the whole globe in captivation.

Meet Jehra, one of Istanbul's techno pioneers co-running RE:VOLT Kollektiv's techno night and community inviting some of techno's most interesting names. For his EP, producer friends close to him were invited to help on a track or remix: Sekulahr, EXIX, Daktik, and Belin.

Starting with Emperyel Köpekler made with Daktik, is setting the tone for the EP just right. A big moving bass line is tickled by percussion, progressing into a more filter-open synth churning forward.

Of big kicks no absence. Temasa Geç is the track to get you in the zone with a dirty and contagious pumping acid trick. 3rd from the pack is Ates, turning warehouses inside out like a freight train dancing on its rails. Cahil hits the right string just as good but goes deeper in the atmosphere with an acid touch.

Sekulahr's remix showcases more refined action of Ates but introduces a cleverly programmed breakbeat with a tight groove. EXIX's take on Temasa Geç is pure brutal melancholy with apocalypse loop hole vibes. Finishing off with Jehra remixing his own track together with Belin in his Deconstructed Mix of Temasa Geç; a breakbeat teardown of the original tucking you in with a blanket of serenity after having heard all of previous hammers.

After a first distinctive appearance in 2021 on the dynamic XX LAB compilation, Vel returns on the independent label leading this next release. "Era L" comprises a series of atypically structured tracks in which modern techno with minimalist tendencies becomes a model on which rich emotional soundscapes are carved. Sensual and complex, Vel's futuristic sound is well established throughout the "Era L" journey

The obsessive "Inspire Me Jim" lays the groundwork for the alienating psychedelic vibe. Mixing lunacy and profound melancholy, the producer invites us on a sometimes tortuous journey, celebrating the female voice and its delicacy: “The world of femininity fascinates me.” This key theme resonates powerfully in her complex music: "The tone of my voice, the sharp percussion, and many reverb"

In addition, four club titles properly nourish the heart of the EP. All of them carefully carry unique rhythms and unexpected drum patterns. Vel’s spontaneity surprises the attentive listener, and claims the ultimate end of classical techno variations. There are frantic rhythms, multidirectional percussion, futuristic sounds, a few dreamy pads, and still a lot of femininity and lunacy. "I look keenly for the unexpected, I try to explore sounds that challenge at first listen, creating strange, even disturbing textures. A mind-blowing trip, against a backdrop of galloping techno through our principal arteries."

Ultimately, "Limitless Wilderness" completes the EP with the distinct feeling that this is just the promising beginning.

Era L" undoubtedly represents an excellent balance between body and mind, with both intriguing introspective atmospheres and captivating eerie sounds. An undeniably modern reinterpretation of rave energy and a sound design that eagerly pushes the established boundaries of techno.

HAVEN continue their string of dance-floor focused weaponry in 2022 with an EP from Evar Records and Craigie Knowes signee Wheez-ie. The A1 launches the release with familiar territory for the LA-based producer on ‘Stolen Moments’ - with in-your-face rave vocals, wild synth spits and acid hits combining in a wild breakbeat banger. The pace continues in to straight up 4-4 territory on the A2 with ‘Fire Drill’, where charging drum work and unruly synthesiser design swing alongside delinquent bleeps and bloops in this chaotic rave techno offering.

On the flip the B1 keeps the energy up with ‘Guttermouth’ - another boisterous slab of wonky techno full of unpredictable beeps, rave stabs, and frisky drum rhythms guaranteed to provide those ‘WTF?!’ moments in the club. The B2 closes the record with a remix of the B1 from Berlin-based American producer False Witness, who transforms the track in to a nimble four-to-the-floor assault combining creepy atmospheres, stepping bass synth and whooping vocal hits in another club-ready slammer.
