Malombo is the longest-lasting group in South Africa. Formed in the early '60s as the Malombo Jazz Men, Malombo continues to explore the possibilities of fusing the musical traditions of South Africa with the improvisation of jazz. While the group initially centered around flute player Abe Cindi and percussionist Julian Bahula, they experienced a major change with the addition of guitarist Dr. Philip Nchipi Tabane. Under Tabane's leadership, Malombo became a breeding ground for great musicians and singers, introducing Mabe Thobejane, Raymond Motau, Oupa Monareng, Gabriel Thobehane, and Beki Mseleku. Wild early work from avant jazz genius Joe McPhee – and a set that's actually pretty darn funky too! This rare indie release features 3 long tracks – two of which were recorded live, with a tight combo that includes a very funky drummer! The album kicks off with the hard wailing "Nation Time", which begins with a shout from Joe, and which rolls into a vamping modal groove (almost Pharoah Sanders-ish) filled with spiritual tenor work from McPhee, and some nice electric piano that sounds very off-kilter – funky, but unusual too. Next up is "Shakey Jake", an excellent 13 minute funk number – with bubbling organ, vamping rhythms, and a nice extended jazz dance groove – one of the rare tunes that has kept the album at the top of collectors' lists for years! And last up is "Scorpio's Dance", a pretty raw and somber track, with a nice open-ended loft jazz quality – balancing things out with a bit of avant energy. New CD version features three great bonus tracks – "Naima", "Blues In C", and "Secret Love".

On first listening you’ll soon hear that Louis Xavier makes music like no other. Born on the French Caribbean island of Martinique, his musical education knew no bounds, untainted by popular culture of the modern day. A true free spirit, his interest in African, European, American and Asian music grew from an early age, although it was only later when he settled in France and discovered the freedom of jazz that the idea to converge these global musical energies began to develop.<br><br>

 He formed his band Synchro Rythmic Ecclectic Language in Paris in the early ‘70s. Well ahead of his time, the eclecticism is what makes the music so special and unique. Fusing intricate rhythms with tones, harmonies and melodies that reflect an absorption of hundreds of years of diverse ethnic traditions, the language of Jazz is chosen as the primary medium to convey Louis’ message: “My search of communication means that even if we seem at first to have nothing in common we can communicate in a universal language which is MUSIC and particularly JAZZ”.

Originally released with a picture sleeve, the original 45 is now impossibly rare and practically unknown even in collectors circles. One song will feature on our forthcoming album ‘Spiritual Jazz 3’ along with further notes and previously unseen pictures.

Kindred Spirits is the brainchild of Amsterdam DJ/promoter KC the Funkaholic, named after his club night in Paradiso. He joined forces with Rush Hour to start up the label.

Kindred Spirits is a philosophy. A philosophy that promotes the enrichment of musical experiences. A group of music fanatics who share the same vibes and ideas formed a collective in order to spread their love and inspiration for music to a wider audience. This collective also reacts to popular fast food music organizations. Just like eating healthy food, traveling or reading books, you can improve the quality of life by discovering inspiring music. Kindred Spirits are eager to discover and promote the music they are passionate about. Their goal is to share this with a wider audience and to put Amsterdam on the musical map. Surely there is enough local Dutch talent to do so and more is emerging as we speak.

Kindred Spirits tries to reach its audience by organizing an intimate club night, introducing groundbreaking artists as well as releasing music that supports this philosophy. Important is that the audience is moved on this musical road that runs through different styles and eras. This boundless mix exists of the deepest soul and jazz, the heaviest Latin and funk, boogie and disco, honest hip hop, Brazilian music and afro-beat, soulful house and new futuristic music styles.

The reason to start the label is to reach a worldwide audience. Both local and international artists are releasing on the label. The only criterion is that they are Kindred Spirits: like-minded people who share the same musical vision.

C'était il y a tout juste un demi-siècle. Mal Waldron enregistrait au Tonstudio Bauer de Ludwigsburg le tout premier disque d'une maison dont le slogan aura grand écho : «Le plus beau son après le silence.» Editions of Contemporary Music, label de haute qualité audiophile plus connu sous le sigle ECM, s'imposera très vite, notamment grâce au succès du fameux Köln Concert de Keith Jarrett.

En attendant, c’est donc un autre esthète des noires et ivoire qui, le premier, posera son empreinte dans l’antre de Manfred Eicher, ce révolutionnaire qui a toujours maintenu une ligne claire entre la libre improvisation et la partition, entre le populaire et le savant.

A cette conjonction, se trouve donc Mal Waldron, le pianiste zen par excellence, qui a eu l’honneur dès la fin des années 50 d’accompagner Billie Holiday dans ses ultimes pas, tout en creusant ses propres sillons pour le compte notamment de New Jazz, la marque de prestige censée abriter les promesses de lendemains d’un jazz en pleine révolution.

Elégance

Sur The Quest, il pose un jalon d'un jazz tout à la fois marqué par l'écriture classique et ouvert à toutes les dérivations. En somme, l'idée directrice qui sera le diapason d'ECM à la fin de la même décennie. Installé deux ans plus tôt à Munich, le pianiste que les Japonais surnomment «le poète solitaire» se retrouve donc tout naturellement en novembre 1969 à la tête d'un trio pour cette session baptisée Free At Last.

«Le free jazz ne signifie ni une complète anarchie ni un son désorganisé», prévient Mal Waldron au dos du LP. La liberté chez le natif de New York, c'est avant tout la possibilité de jouer comme il l'entend, suivant la grille d'un bon vieux blues comme d'en sortir par des accords dissonants, de plaquer de grosses rythmiques jazz funk comme sur le terrible Rock My Soul ou de partir en une rêverie modale sur Balladina.

Seul l'instant compte chez celui qui prévient : «Si vous regardez trop en arrière, vous trébucherez au moment de faire un pas en avant.» Cela tombe sous le sens et, chez ce pianiste qui a en mains toute l'histoire afro-américaine, une telle sentence rime avec une atemporelle élégance. Il suffit de consulter les palanquées de disques, dont quelques pièces de premier choix produits en France (du puissant Blood and Guts sur Futura à l'intense Songs of Love and Regret pour Freelance) que Mal Waldron enregistrera à partir de cette date jusqu'à sa mort en 2002 pour mesurer combien sa musique nous faisait toujours du bien.

Bonus

On ne saura que trop remercier le label, peu enclin à ressortir sous format vinyle son catalogue, de fêter son anniversaire avec une édition augmentée d'un disque complet de bonus, des variations sur la même thématique et de photos et partitions de cette historique session. Last but least, moins de deux ans plus tard, le pianiste sera encore le premier à graver un album, toujours en trio, mais cette fois en live pour une autre grande firme basée à Munich, Enja.

Mal Waldron Trio - Rock My Soul

A 1970 classic from the Barbados-born trumpeter, arranged by Graham Collier taken from the album Flare Up. This is essential for anyone interested in British jazz: the triple-sax front line is comprised of John Surman, Alan Skidmore and Mike Osborne, with Chris Laurence and John Webb on bass and drums alternately, Frank Ricotti on vibes and congas, and John Taylor's uncredited Fender Rhodes piano.
