Nick Lapien and Robin Koek have earned plenty of stripes exploring different strains of techno and electronica, both individually and together as Artefakt (@artefakt-official). It is their collaborative work which has found a natural home on Delsin, and now their second album on the label, Days Bygone, helps launch the Interstellar series as they continue to explore beyond the dancefloor trappings of conventional techno.

If their 2017 debut album Kinship married forthright techno dynamics with a mellow, melancholic sensibility and 2019’s Monsoon saw them heading into deeper, meditative rhythms, then Days Bygone finds Artefakt leaning even further away from standard structures to create an album steeped in mystery. It’s not a formless ambience they’ve conjured up though - pronounced patterns are still prevalent to propel Artefakt’s productions, but there’s less emphasis on percussion and more time spent shaping soundworlds with nimble arps and gliding pads.

There is still space for beats on Days Bygone, but as on ‘Orinoco Basin’ those drums fall in fluttering formations to gently buffet languid keys rather than imposing on the direction of the music. The heaviest they get is on the dense, swinging ‘Terraforming’, but it’s a light-footed configuration compared to a trad-techno thump, with the drums serving as another texture in conversation with the elements surrounding them.

Because of the shifted focus away from hegemonic beats, it’s left to the keys and pads to define the landscape each track traverses. Sometimes furtive and suggestive, elsewhere pearlescent and diffused across great expanses, it’s these striking, sublime formations which define the atmosphere Lapien and Koek have sought to create. The outright ambience of the closing double act pushes this idea to a logical conclusion, leaving the possibilities open for what comes next from Artefakt.

Vertigo

Earlier this year Artefakt released a new album via Delsin, a striking collection of pensive electronics and techno which was designed as much to humble the independent listener as it was to intrigue on the dancefloor.

The Berlin based pair have become well known and acclaimed for their unique take on techno, often channeling deep ethereal soundscapes and melody atop rugged drums and percussion.

Over the years they have released material via the likes of Sungate, Konstrukt and Semantica Records. It is however Delsin where they appear to have made themselves most at home, releasing material which sits between worlds and defies the notion that techno might need to be rigid 4/4 focussed club music. 

We've featuured the pair several times previously. However, this is the first time that they have recorded a mix for the website, a special occassion given the scarcity of these sets.

Collaborations is a new series curated by Artefakt on their own imprint De Stijl. Inviting friends and likeminded artists for extended studio improvisations crafting an EP based on live sessions.

First guest is Claudio PRC, a close friend and familiar face in the deep techno scene. Having released on labels such as Semantica, TGP, his own 012 and most recently Delsin Records, he has a close connection to Artefakt. Both artists reside in Berlin and share a dedicated passion for atmospheric and immersive ambient and techno.

Collaborations I features four jams combining the unmistakable strengths of both artists, resulting in a well varied pack of emotive techno with room for experiment. Where 'Gaia' and 'Dwelling' feel like iconic tracks of the pair teaming up, on the flip side 'Sonic Rite' slows down in pace and catches a magnificent groove. The shared love for ambient results in the mesmerizing closer of the EP 'Distant Light'.

Ceaselessly pushing the boundaries between proper enslaving music for the mind and straight out incendiary floor dynamics bound to wreak havoc down the basement, Dutch production unit Artefakt counts as one of the country’s finest exponents of that sleek, hypnotic school of techno. Having carved out their niche as stalwarts of seminal Amsterdam-based imprint Delsin, the pair keep on dishing out their enveloping blends of silken analogue rhythms and elegant 4x4 digressions into a dreamy unknown, which the present RYC mix makes a perfect showcase of. A trance-inducing journey away from real-life hustle and across lushly-textured jungles of sound, where the martial pulse of 909s, squelchy acid tropes and magnetic deep tech elevation coalesce into a volatile mix of escapist endeavour and big-room punch from hell. After a period of self-reflection, the Dutch duo returned in 2019 to launch a label with a new EP. De Stijl serves as a platform for their musical explorations and those of their close friends. The imprint’s inaugural EP,  Far and Wide, a lesson in dancefloor-ready techno that prioritises mood and melancholy, preceded Monsoon, Artefakt’s second album, this time on Svreca’s mighty Semantica Records. Across eight tracks, the duo evidenced an intrinsic understanding of rhythmic structures, confirming their status as one of the most singular and emotionally evocative acts in contemporary techno. 
As a live act, Lapien and Koek have performed all across Europe, North America, and Asia, their analog-heavy set a must-see for fans of melodic and deeply emotive techno. Drawing on their shared love for collecting records, they also perform as DJs, crafting long, hypnotic narratives laced with exclusive material and records from the expensive collections, old and new. 
Having first crosses paths at university, Lapien and Koek began making music together in 2012. Lapien, whose infectious, swinging house cuts have featured on Rekids, Soul People Music, and DVS1’s Mistress, was just beginning his career as a solo artist; while Koek, who designs his own artistic systems and teaches at dBs Music Berlin, had just earned a Master of Arts from Utrecht's School of Arts, specializing in Sound Design and Composition. After releasing two EPs on the legendary Dutch imprint Delsin Records, in 2017 Koek and Lapien presented their debut album, Kinship, cementing their nuanced, atmospheric style while showcasing its breadth. It was the first big step in their ongoing pursuit to adopt techno as an art-form rather than a genre.

The second release on De Stijl expands the sound of the imprint introducing three new names to the catalog. The record ascends into a subterranean rave with Aphelions' 'Temple 7' depicting a ritualistic gathering carved out in distorted analog transients, shimmering melodies and modulated voices moving over deep pounding sub frequencies. Label founders Artefakt sustain the urgency on the A side with 'Agents Of Reality', a high energy uncompromised off-beat structure venturing into eery resonant pads gravitating towards a subdued acid motive.

Energy shifts towards subsonic atmospheres takes place on the B side, as Artificial Drm envelops the listener in a layered driven spectacle with his heady piece 'Human with no name'. From the residual hiss and feedback tones of the B1, Northern Electronics affiliate Korridor emerges with an epic ambient piece titled 'VI'. Lush pads and analog square bass-lines drift off into rhythmical arpeggiations bringing a close to versatile record which transports the listener to another place and feeds the imagination.
