Cementing himself as an integral part of the French Indie music scene, French producer and multi-instrumentalist Crayon, real name Lauren Larue, signed to Erased Tapes in 2021 to herald in a new chapter in his life.

His two track EP, consisting of Misplaced and Ithinkso, sees him going back to his electronic, UK-infused roots. Whilst the opening song Misplaced — featuring vocals from Gracy Hopkins and Jo Lowenthal of Australian indie band Tora — maintains a clearer narrative; the second is a blend of traditional 00’s uk garage and jazz, almost fully instrumental. It’s this clear contrast the producer wanted to explore further, made possible by spending a month away in Morocco with choreographer Leo Walk and a bunch of other creatives and friends in early 2020. While Misplaced had already been recorded several months before, Ithinkso was sitting comfortably amongst a raft of other unfinished songs in Crayon’s hard drive. “It was only after seeing Leo’s excitement at first listen, and the incredible and abstract dance moves he would throw while discovering the song that I knew I had to do something with it,” the artist recalls.

As he and Leo went to spend a week at Plastician’s mystical domain Jean Francois Fourtou, in the outskirts of Marrakech, they found themselves submerged in a parallel world, surrounded by giant sculptures of insects, and a fully equipped, real sized reversed house. One quiet night they decided to experiment together with Leo repeating specific moves, almost turning himself into a human boomerang, while Crayon’s assignment was to write an assimile yet efficient electronic beat to it. After sampling a very short bit from French Soul singer Enchantée Julia (who Crayon was producing for at the time), Ithinkso was born, named after what they would both hear phonetically from the sample.

Both tracks wouldn’t have been completed without yet another collaborator, Crayon’s then roommate Bastien Brison, a Paris based jazz pianist. Together they held, when Lauren returned from the trip, what they simply called The Jazz Club in their apartment. It was a weekly jam/live painting/dancing event that they opened to a (not so) small lucky audience as a way to cope with the absence of live music, and events in general. Once again, the clear contrast between traditional jazz music and modern sounds and movements, that gave him the urge to make this project.

Adam’s tracks are generally accompanied by meditative song titles and sprawling pads, and EP opener ‘I’ve Been Waiting’ encompasses this perspective. The track's subtle movement signifies that change is constant, but there’s always beauty to be found whether we’re waiting or not. ‘Sonar’ enters the fray with its bass heavy kickdrums and chopping breaks. Duality is sourced within the tracks melancholy, yet hopeful musicality, before the A-side comes to a close with ‘What’s Next’ - an ambient dreamscape that plays out amongst the cosmos. 

Title track ‘Innervisions kicks things off again, this time verging slightly left but still distinctly Adam, with an ethereal glow and moon-lit glaze. Buoyant and gated pads communicate the mood in ‘M1 & I’, before The record’s end comes in the form of subaquatic beats and ocean blue arpeggios, shimmering brightly across the surface. Personal, intricate and emotive, ‘Innervisions’ is a candid story told from a producer who lets the music do the talking.

Philip Lawns is an Italian music producer, co-founder of Turbokitchen, releasing on labels such as Motek and My Favorite Robot Recordings.

In his debut EP as solo artist for Thisbe Recordings, “Ten Years of Travel”, he tells the tale of the Odyssey and his protagonist Ulysses through the use of machines (such as Nord Lead 4, Roland SPD-30, Behringer TD -3, Yamaha Reface CS & Moog sub 37) and hot grooves. Out of his secret garden, a perfect acoustically isolated walk-in closet, “Ten Years of Travel” was born. Particular to the structure of the EP is that each track has its own remix.

With a rework of “Distorted View”, Days of Being Wild deliver a dark disco classic, true to their idiosyncratic sound and original beats, mesmerizing the dancefloor straight away. Traveller and cosmic poet Pyrame rework of the single “Start” first feels like rain dropping before the storm comes and reveals an euphoric feeling as the break starts. Romain FX nails a fine remix of Ten Years of Travel, the main single of Philip Lawns´EP. His remix is a pure italo disco rework of the original, infused with pop synths and keys, that won´t leave anyone still and quiet. Banger.

Producers Marco Cassanelli and Beppe Massara (aka Deckard) follow up their previous collaborations on the label, ‘Opus Sectile’ and ‘Pyramiden’ with an improvisational album titled ‘Splitted’. It is an amalgamation of sonic elements closely resembling their live performances and is the result of several studio sessions in Trani, Puglia. 

Additionally, the release is part of the lineup for “Programmazione Puglia Sounds 2022”, an initiative that supports and strengthens musical projects coming out of the world-renowned South Italian region. Armed with analog and modular synthesizers, Marco Cassanelli and Deckard take you on an emotive journey inspired by geometry and symmetry used in all visual arts. 

Characteriszd by their dynamic compositions, the six tracks flow as one - incorporating components from one another, remixed according to the artist’s mood. From the imaginative dreamscapes of bonus track ‘Abandoned Town’ through to the playful synth lines of ‘Rectangle’, the release offers vibrant textures from start to finish. Its trippy, ambient atmospheres display the pair’s mastery of the instruments they wield and provide another outstanding release for the label. 

Marco Cassanelli and Deckard’s ‘Splitted’ drops via T.A. Rock Records on Beatport June 22nd, followed by a full digital and CD release on July 1st, 2022, and a vinyl edition in Autumn.

PREMIERE : Marco Cassanelli And Deckard - Pentagon

The sun beamed down upon the small seaside resort as bathers lay baking in the heat of the mid afternoon. Most others had retreated in some form of mass exodus to shadier, leafier pastures. However, the few hardcore worshippers would be left to fend off the radiant beams which illuminated the beach. 

Nobody had ever imagined it might become this hot, not in their wildest fantasies. They prayed and waited for the night to come when they would be able to return to the shore - to sip wine and dance beneath the starlit skies up above in a more moderate climate. Perhaps the exodus had done them good, they'd been on the beach for far too long. 

Coyote is remixed by Ruf Dug on a sweltering new EP for MM Discos, a beautiful balearic house inspired crossover which is as apt in this baking heat as you might expect. Bring me a sunlounger and a peach ice tea...
