February "hello to the wind" electronic music chart 2020

His mind had been running wild, a tangle of thoughts that he couldn't seem to process. Walking at night had become the medicine in these moments; a brief respite from the eternal rat race of daily life. On this evening the stars above seemed to shine brighter than he'd ever seen before, each one letting off its own bright beacon of light. To him it was these instances that served as a reminder of just how small they were down on planet Earth...

 
Having previously released on labels like Running Back and Royal Oak, Swedish producer and DJ Arkajo - who also makes up one half of duo Genius Of Time - returns to Aniara Recordings, the label he co-runs with Fabian Bruhn and Dorisburg. His Nadir EP showcases his own contemporary take on electronic music; three tracks laced with intricate drum programming and heavy subs.

The field rustled and the wind blew amidst the tall trees, the dense green leaves hung heavy on the branches and weighed down the old wood. This was organic motion and as the seasons began to change so too would the planet. Deep, moody browns and golds lined the forest floor as he walked beneath the clouds, it was cold and a chill hung in the air so menacing it cut upon your breath. As the sky darkened all around the clouds looked set to burst and leak atop the land...

Tom Place is set to release a new EP on Bade Records, an imprint founded by Brothers Black which has acted as an outlet for forward thinking electronic music with a deep, atmospheric take on club focussed material.

Completing a red hot trio of remix EPs of Calm’s By Your Side album is this final part with Lucas Croon, Cantoma and Gallo and Yuri Shulgin all serving up expansive and mind altering new versions.

He doesn’t release often but when he does you need to listen to Lucas Croon. His unique take on ‘Before Landing’ is a proper dance floor heater to get you on your toes. Once you're there, a gentle rush of rave euphoria tases over you and sends shivers down your spine as old school breakbeats and glowing pads complete the trip.

Elsewhere, long time Balearic pin up, scene hero and all round blissed out boss man Phil Mison has a new album corn gin the spring. Before that, he becomes Cantoma for a timeless version of ‘You Can See The Sunrise Again’ that has bright blue skies and jaunty chords making you move.

Regular label artist homie Gallo is in the form of his life right now - he's resident DJ at Hell Yeah's weekly Balearic night Buena Onda in Berlin, has a growing reputation for being one of the best eclectic selectors in the game and is currently working on compiling the forthcoming BUENA ONDA comp with label head Marco. He gets long legged on his deep cut remix of ‘Sky Color Passing’ which is another killer that slowly but surely works you in a slow motion acid trance.  

Completing this most exquisite outing is Yuri Shulgin,  a multi-instrumentalist music producer from Tajikistan with credits on Cocktail d'Amore Music. His spellbinding take on 'Ending of Summer, Beginning of Autumn' is a fusion of jazz, leftfield and electronica will have you in a spin and your head lost in the clouds amongst the twinkling stars and cosmic pads.

Following Locks On Our Doors, Not On Our Hearts, a long form confessional for Blackest Ever Black, M. Quake returns to redirect relationship lament into alternate, shifting worlds for 'Fall in Love With Yourself' via Purely Physical.

Intentionally released on Valentines Day, we are treated first to an off the cuff philosophy on “how to love”. Side A uses a sample from an interview with Eartha Kitt, her voice sitting atop Quake’s stripped back, sticks ‘n’ stones production style which utilises background noise elements in the interview - birds chirping, dogs barking - with Eartha’s powerful attitude emphasised by an almost gospel-like dubbed out organ.

Side B, in classic instrumental dub style, acts almost as a demonstration or exhibition of this new found self love, giving us the fully fleshed out version that unveils all the sounds present in the A side and plays to all of the producer's strengths. What’s left of the vocal is echoed to smithereens, the sub bass line and resonant chords all harmoniously combining to create a surreal, Disneyland-like utopian setting.

Having previously held court in several secret circles including F ingers, Th Duo, Tarcar and - possibly - Kallista Kult, Quake’s influences are audible and there for the taking. With 'Fall in Love With Yourself' and its BEB predecessor, a significant solo narrative is beginning to take shape, shimmying out of the dark.

Down by the canal, people watched the water roll on down the stream towards the central river. The canal was like the veins of the city, passing life between the cells of the system which was swarmed and swamped by people in towerblocks and on high streets. This place was special, it was an escape from the struggle and strife of city living. A chance for something new...

Cong Burn is a record label perhaps underestimated, it has been an outlet for intricate experimentation and has been responsible for the release of music by the likes of Lanark Artefax, BFTT, Howes, Chekov and more. The field was empty and bare but for a small patch of colour and greenery in the far corner. Here the wild flowers grew amidst what was otherwise a bitter and barren landscape. They were a radiant showcase of pinks and purples, reds and yellows, blues and oranges. Stood beside the small flower bed he looked backwards towards the city from where he had came, it was a collection of dense grey and black shadows in the hazy glow of the late afternoon sun. It was bleak out here but for the tiny patch, it was all that was left of colour in this world. 

Baroque Sunburst is a relatively new record label moving with a quick pace and a keen ear. The label is set to release a new EP from Soreab and it's an interesting, pensive affair.
