In the midst of his recently accrued status as a ‘Masterchef’ finalist, long-standing Dispatch stalwart Survival returns to the label with a highly anticipated new solo album, ‘Take It Back’.

Inspired by working with Script on a Metalheadz album as ‘SCAR’ last summer, Survival went straight back into the studio, with a renewed hunger to focus on his own solo material.

‘Take It Back’ represents the first Survival album since his 2009 debut on Exit Records, re-engaging with his core sound and this sampler demonstrates both sides of his sound today.

Thirteen tracks make up the astutely arranged album, including a collaboration with label boss and close friend Ant TC1, plus vocal features from Codebreaker, Eleanor Higgins and two tunes with Naomi Pryor (having worked extensively as part of the SCAR / Orkyd project).

With a fresh outlook on his artform and exciting plans to link his music and his cooking, Survival takes things back to the source, rekindling with his most celebrated DnB moniker.

Since inception in 2010, Skankandbass has unearthed some of the freshest talents in the scene and has opened many doors for unsigned artists. Now, a few years in to the game, Skankandbass decides to take on the role of a record label to put together a series of free download singles which aims to further help spread the work of the best unsigned, newcomer artists who deserve more recognition.

Joe Trex, based in Camden, London, has honed in his production over the last 6 years, slowly improving his techniques and carving out a sound identity of his own. Living in the UK, you quickly learn that you can't trust the weather to indicate the arrival of summer. For DnB heads, though, there's a far more reliable signal to gear up for festival and holiday season. And now it's here. Yes, Technique's Summer 2017 LP has dropped, and it's done so with Richter-troubling force.

For a start off, it's a monumental fifty-one tracks deep (with two continuous mixes from Muffler thrown in for good measure) featuring contributions from all corners of the drum 'n' bass scene. For example, Viper bosses Matrix & Futurebound pass through, with the insane 8-bit video game riffs of “Scatterbrain”. Brookes Brothers deliver the stripped-back R&B-flavoured “Good to Me”. Invaderz underpin jazz keys with rolling beats in “Gruisin”. And, who would have predicted the appearance of two cuts from the mighty Aquasky?

Plus, of course, the regular Technique roster are out in force. New signings T-Phonic & Deadman give us an instant-classic junglist workout, complete with thundering breaks and savage Reese bass. We've got MaxNRG doing crazy things to melodies in “Soul Fever”, two pieces from Document One, Tantrum Desire's “Gravitate”, L Plus's dancefloor bubbler “Going Away”, tracks from Spectrem...and that's before we even get onto the contributions from label bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith themselves.

This album covers the full spectrum and then twists the dial a few notches more.

Stoner & Ethik - Toysword [Premiere]

You can always rely on Santoku to bring you the most vehemently anticipated newcomers. From their renowned compilation series, to their standalone releases, the imprint strives to bring you a transatlantic range of talent, pulling together every corner of the globe and giving different snapshots into the diverse world of drum & bass. Whether the artists are from their US hub, or more further afield throughout the European scene, the A&R flex at Santoku is unyielding. For their next release, Senpai joins Santoku’s definitive back catalogue, demonstrating their role as a tastemaker in not just within the US, but throughout its full stretch. 

Senpai is a Russian neurofunk producer hailing from its drum & bass hotbed in Moscow. For his first release, ‘Flandria’ really upholds a standard which he’ll be expected to adhere to for the remainder of his career. And it’s looking to be a promising one, especially alongside the stringent manufacturing and song writing prevalent throughout ‘Flandria’ and its flipside ‘Unsourced’. With an unreserved passion for the deeper side of neuro, his breaking of boundaries is fearless. 

‘Flandria’ opens on a whirling flurry of uplifting beats and synth patterns, before it begins to crash into life with softly distorted male vocals and relays of piano notes. The record then begins to crunch through moody LFO, vastly juxtaposing its intro and grabbing you unaware. Senpai brings you a ferocity which doesn’t instantly throw itself at you and instead broods sulkily from layer to layer. Despite being on the darker end of the spectrum, his production standard is more understated, a clever engineering which gives him an edge over his baying competition. There’s an elegance in his work, which is sometimes no present with the heavier sounds. 

‘Unsourced’ brings out the deeper part of Senpai’s repertoire, a mass of biting sonic which once again utilises Senpai’s brilliant use of intro. With clicking kick drum and snapping percussion, the track winds up into diluted chaos. A whirring concoction of heavy drum relays and a winding bassline, he hits harder with each figure of eight. Despite being previously unheard of, Senpai’s music will now become infamous. Although with his engineering, this was the only outcome for his first release.
