Original Creative Project Text: 
For my Original Creative Project, I wanted to start and become more confident in Mastering music for digital platforms as it allows me to build upon my desire to be a mix engineer, as developing my skill set with the tools and plugins I use. I approached the topic at first thinking I would just master within the genre I was comfortable in, that being rock and metal. However, I decided I would push myself out of my comfort zone to master less aggressive styles of music. I decided to try and emulate the style of John Greenham, who works more in the pop world of mastering, but I found myself inspired by his process. I decided to try and master an acoustic indie song which was covered by Joseph O’Sullivan applying the style of mastering engineers I had studied.The use of reference tracks during mastering allowed me to draw inspiration from other artists and their masters such as Lovejoy and Mom Jeans to suit the style of the song I was mastering. This creative project has also prompted me to check the response of my room for mixing and mastering with monitors. It forced me to be aware of the peaks and troughs in the room and how uneven the room was. This allowed me to compensate for EQ decisions based on what was accentuated or in a null point in my room. One technical realisation that I valued was that I needed to sit back and make notes on my first listen to the mix, which is where I found the majority of the problems or moves I would need to make. Another technical realisation I had was that I needed to have a fresh perspective and a fresh set of ears for mastering, as well as using different techniques. I also found myself making small moves that accumulated over time to make significant changes, such as using multiple compressors in stages to not overload a single one, and small EQ boosts or cuts. Colouration also came into mastering with saturation, more specifically tape saturation sounding quite pleasant to my ears, creating a rounded and smooth sound to the master. The final stage for mastering was control, so I implemented multiband compression and transparent limiting to tame any peaks and harshness or imbalance.
