The 16th edition of the KIX series. This week Sempra (@xsemprax), a DJ and producer based in Bristol specialising in eclectic and upbeat sounds, brings us another multi-genre set. As co-owner of @draconian-label he's been pushing the freshest jungle and rave sounds for some time, and this set is no different. Spanning the whole spectrum of underground UK-based rave music; Dub, UK Garage, Breaks, Grime, Drill or Jungle, you name it, he's got it!

Featuring a naughty selection of his own productions and unreleased dubs, this is definitely a set to remember. It'll get you moving whether you're in the chilling in the sun, or sat inside on a rainy day!!

This long anticipated debut EP from Domino Effect Records head honcho's S. Jay & Ostertag has been months in the making and finally lands as DEFECT004. The EP introduces itself with a heavy original production 'Have You' focusing on the huge contrast of bass when it drops.. Beginning as they mean to go on, the following 3 productions feature a carefully selected choice of other Domino artists, including Filthy Rich, Kyle Watson & A. Lister.

'Smoking Mirrors' is another hard hitting garage lick with big reese basses and skanking rhythms, and these boys know how to provide just that, following that is a collaboration with South African bass pioneer Kyle Watson, 'Let Me Down' splits their 2 styles right down the middle as Kyle's touches become apparent as soon as the track hits full flow... The epic breakdown is ear-grabbing and full of energy.

Finally, the last track with A. Lister, provides a great way to close the EP off, 'No Question' is another housey production with trademark A. Lister drums and grooving percussive elements to keep the feet moving from start to finish. Enjoy this great release from Domino Effect Records, an imprint that is fast becoming one of the most exciting labels in the UK this year.

Following on from the irrepressible space-sci-fi-bass fuelled Sedona EP that dropped in the summer, DDD bossmen Truth are taking that theme to another dimension with Portals - an EP so futuristic, trippy and technically accomplished it makes Rick and Morty seem like Winnie the Pooh, with more bass pressure than Eeyore could possibly stand. 

Don’t be fooled by the mad scientist aesthetic, though, as beyond the tracks’ otherworldly compositions, eccentric idiosyncrasies and meticulously detailed sound design - these tunes will slap you senseless in the dance - delivering sub frequencies so dense, their gravitational pull was registered with NASA pre-release.

From lead single and opening track future-dubstep stomper Alien Bass, to the magnificently ethereal yet savage collaboration with Dub Princess, ‘Drift’ - this EP demonstrates a duo at the peak of their powers and in complete control of their craft - with a constant thread of musicality shining through the tracks’ ongoing complexities.

Has it really been 3 years in the game already for 1Forty? Madness. To achieve as much as they have in such a short time is nothing short of incredible and just has to be commended. Staying faithful to their tried-and-tested release formula, and in that their label roots, 1Forty continue to push the boundaries on their latest celebratory release offering, picking out three absolute gems from their back catalogue and spinning them with a fresh VIP treatment. Selected from each of their separate genre entities: Grime, Bass and Funky & Garage, this birthday EP shines a light on new VIP's from label favourites Hayz, NLMT and this scorcher, a fresh variation in production on 'Worthwhile' from Murder He Wrote, with Logan's vocals still shining everstrong. Articulate Sound are a midlands based, digital label that are at the forefront of the UK underground bass scene. Set out to give undiscovered, upcoming artists a platform and foundation to showcase their talent, and to look for individual styles and sounds you won’t hear anywhere else. Articulate specialise in UK Bass, UK Funky and Breaks however covering all spectrums of the scene, from Bassline to Grime they have it covered.

Founded in 2015 as a promotional Soundcloud channel, they then went on to release a succession of free compilations, featuring artists from all over the world such as Landis LaPace and Cellardore to name a few. In the closing months of 2016, they then took it a step further and released a huge joint collaboration with renowned promoter, distributor and publisher Pack London. Although only being a free channel, Articulate Sounds releases have received support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra, Rinse, Represent and Radar amongst many others.

Along with releasing over 140 tracks for over 70 different artists, Articulate Sound have now also launched their own events, showcasing their extensive roster and some of the best upcoming artists in the underground scene, with TC4, Darkzy and Murder He Wrote headlining thus far.

In 2017, Articulate grew even stronger, hitting number 1 in the UKG and Breakbeat charts with their debut official release by Daze Prism, receiving support from the likes of My Nu Leng, DJ EJ and many others and even getting called “one of the most consistent curator channels in modern broken and bass music” by Juno Download. Articulate then went onto hit number 1 again for Doc Zee’s debut release “Feel Free”, which has since been featured in the likes of DJMag and Dummy. Finishing off 2017 Articulate released their final EP of the year titled “PINK GUN” by Ivo and went onto be called “One of our standout labels of 2017 for a top draw project” by Juno Download themselves. 2018 has been no calmer for Articulate, already releasing Spectrum’s debut single “Resonate” in January aswell as having releases lined up for the next 12 months that are sure to cook up a storm, it’s fair to say Articulate are not a label to sleep on.
