LONGHORN BEETLE (27.11.2013)

During my nocturnal sessions (as alfa00, this time in May 2022) I am always surprised by new sounds ... this time it is Barn Owl (Tyto alba) aka Screech Owl ... flying and screaming around our garden ... you can hear also sonar of hunting bats (around 57kHz), crickets Acheta domestica (from home-insectarium) and "kwatar" (4-string fret-less electric guitar).

When I left former-Czechoslovakia in 1986, I attempted to cross border in mountains between Austria and Germany, that time called West Germany. I was captured by German authorities and placed in camp for political refugees in Schonau Am Konigsee in Alps. One way to express myself was at that time writing; mainly poetry and drawings – i could not really make music, except listening. I was writing in Czech language, but nobody would obviously understand. My mother tongue became very fast redundant and simultaneously I was not able to write in any other language. I entered in strange transition: I started to write in purely phonetic imaginary language, I was focussed only on sounds and still keeping characteristic sounds of Czech language. I recorded 3 examples of such poems, originally written 1986; there is no meaning except for tonal qualities of spoken word. Since then I didn’t write in this lingo.

Rainforest in the morning 6:37 - 23rd November 2007 - in Slavek's Creek, Mamori Lake, Amazonas in Brazil - recorded direct to mic 4060 and Sound Devices 722 (wav. 44.1 kHz 24bit) by Slavek Kwi. Mysterious cicada startled me while listening through headphones during recording. Since 2007, I came back to record in this creek many times every year until 2011. Special thanks to Francisco Lopez for making that possible.

An audiovisual installation exploring sounds and images as particles of reality, clustered to form meta-entity in an attempt to provoke no meaning at all - only pure potentiality. A sound 
installation consisting of 2 systems playing in tandem. 

I. Low frequency response speaker is attached on the wall. To the cone of speaker is attached semitransparent nylon wires leading across the room and creating a web. Numerous ping-pong balls are attached on the wires; inside each one is a small artificial pearl. As the membrane of the speaker vibrates, the wires oscillate. Consequently, the white balls start to shake, producing high-pitched rattling sounds throughout the room.
II. Low frequency response speaker is placed on the floor. On the ceiling is a large sheet of silvery mylar plastic. Nylon wire leads from the speaker towards the surface of the mylar. The vibration from speaker is transmitted to the surface of the silvery plastic membrane, creating r ipples and rustling sounds.

Slavek Kwi is a sound-artist, composer and researcher interested in the phenomena of perception as the fundamental determinant of relations with reality. He has a longstanding fascination with sound-environments, developing what he terms ‘electroacoustic sound-paintings’ that oscillate between sound only works and interdisciplinary works exploring social (co-founder of Soun.Din), spatial and temporal processes. These complex audio-based situations are created mainly from site specific recordings, resulting in subjective reports for radio broadcast, ‘cinema for ears’ for multi-channel playback, sound installations integrated into the environment and performances. From the early nineties Slavek has operated under the name Artificial Memory Trace. He facilitates experimental sound workshops with autistic children and those with learning disabilities. The workshop technique emphasises extensive listening and the stimulation of creativity through observation and the support of natural tendencies. Slavek was born in former Czechoslovakia, lived 14 years in Belgium and has been based in Ireland since 2000.
