Loop made from a recording of the slapping of a shoe against the floor of a tunnel, and its resonant reverb, near Killiney Bay. Heavily processed with an altered groove, looped a few times.

Excerpt from a recording  from an Otolith Group video that forms part of the Etel Adnan exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). The video ("I See Infinite Distance Between Any Point and Another") centres on readings by Adnan of her poem "Sea", hence the inclusion of an extract here.

Excerpt from a recording of a performance by Paul Gwilliam at the opening of his solo show "Out for a Duck" at Catalyst Arts in Belfast 6th August 2015. Two performers including Gwilliam himself, complete with humorous sculptural appendages attached to their bodies navigated the crowd in the gallery whistling to each other. Gwilliam, with blocks of cheese attached to his knees and elbows and a plaster goblet of water moulded to his face, the artist 'swam' on his back, launching himself from the walls and pillars by means of his feet.

Field recording of the Powerscourt Waterfall in County Wicklow, made early one morning in the absence of any other people. We were blessed with sunshine too that morning making it easier to get down to the river and record as close as possible .

The Powerscourt Waterfall

Treated prepared microphone recording made at the Powerscourt Waterfall in County Wicklow. I tried to keep as much of the percussive part of the water hitting the rocks in this sketch as possible and yet the feedback this has created gives it a rather strange sound. As with the other Deeper Seas, or indeed the Deeper River material from my previous project, the listener may prefer to use headphones for a richer experience.

A Deeper Sea v.7

Brief sketch with this time a very quiet source using a prepared microphone in a tiny stream leading into the main river in Mount Usher Gardens in County Wicklow. I've played around with the EQ here to make the streaming sounds far more prominent than in previous Deeper Seas, so much so that it almost sounds as though it originates from a far bigger and more violent source of water than in fact it did. As with previous Deeper Seas and Rivers, the listener may prefer headphones for a richer experience. 

A Deeper Sea v.8

Field recording made by panning and moving between the threading and weaving rooms at the Avoca Mill in County Wicklow. There were about half a dozen men operating the machines each wearing mufflers to protect their ears. The machines themselves were massive and looked potentially very dangerous. The rhythmic sound of them though was oddly hypnotic. The Mill itself is surprisingly small; the site largely consisting of a restaurant and gift shop.

Threading and Weaving at the Avoca Mill

Whilst I wasn't able to hang around much in the Avoca Mill, I was able to place a prepared microphone between two open doors at the back of the threading and weaving rooms, essentially getting a mix of both sounds from each simultaneously. This sketch is quite different from the others as I've been able to filter out much of the background noise and with EQ and Delay hone in on these tiny occurrences in the recording and make them terrifyingly massive. As with the other Deeper Seas and Rivers, headphones are advised. 

A Deeper Sea v.9 (I)

Excerpt from a recording made from my seat on the Avoca Day Tour Bus to County Wicklow. Norman, our tour guide and bus driver, was informative and entertaining as this excerpt proves, although I got the distinct impression that he wasn't one for silences. This excerpt is from the tail end of the tour, on the journey back to Dublin from Glendalough.

Prepared microphone recording made on the riverbank from the Upper Lake in Glendalough beside the monastic ruins of St. Kevin. I've applied a process similar to that I used for v.9 here, although with far less feedback and keeping the background intact. As with previous Deeper Seas and Rivers, headphones are advised.

A Deeper Sea v.10

Brief excerpt from a recording of a stream running through the old Miners Town at the far end of the Upper Lake in Glendalough. Made on my second visit to Glendalough in which I explored the surrounding areas in more detail. The Miners Town consists of a few derelict buildings, piles of quartz and stone, rusting machinery, scrub and swamp land. A stone path leads along the valley (most of which is a nature reserve and off-limits to pedestrians) with huge rocks and boulders on each side, and then up to a waterfall and a walk along the cliffs.

These recordings were made during a 6-week residency in Dublin as part of the Fire Station Dublin and Acme London Artists Exchange, July 4th - August 14th 2015.
