It Don't Bother Me by Beats Working (John Hardman)

I wrote this song at the end of my paternity leave. I spent a lot of days taking stroller walks with my daughter to places i used to frequent a lot in my early teenage years. It gave me this weird feeling of nostalgia. I started to think about choices that i have made, and how i could have been in a totally different and much worse place.

The writing process started when i was fooling around with this "legend of Zelda" dungeon theme thing on the piano. Then it evolved into a more song structure thing, vocal melodies started to appear, and then the chorus section hit and i knew this had to be my second single.

The theme of the song is about the first innocent rebellions of teenagers. Breaking your curfew, bending the rules and doing mischievous things at night etc. They are all very innocent acts, you're just trying to awkwardly figure out who you are. But in those moments you felt like a Villain in the Night.

The story of the lyrics is painting a picture of a group of friends being out at night, discussing, partying and goofing about. Trying not to conform to societies norms. Finding comfort with their "Devils" because they do not judge or mind their behavior.

PROGRAM NOTES
The idea for Winter Songs occurred to me after I wrote a short song based on the sixth poem from Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Wallace Stevens for a group composition project at Cornell University. The original idea was to have each student in the department set a different poem in this work, culminating in an evening long song cycle. There are many compelling settings ofThirteen Ways, so instead of trying to contribute yet another, I decided to compose a song cycle using winter-themed poems by a variety of poets. David Neal, the bass-baritone who sang my initial song, Icicles Filled the Long Window, liked the idea so much that he asked me for a complete cycle. I spent months collecting and reading as many poems about winter as I could find. Winter-themed poems seem to fall into two categories: those that are playful and fun, and those that are quite serious. I chose to set six serious poems, including another one by Wallace Stevens, and one each by Robert Creeley, Richard Wilbur, A.R. Ammons and Billy Collins.

Winter Songs was commissioned by David Neal and The Arts at Grace through the New York State Music Fund and was premiered by David Neal and the Society for New Music in April 2008.

Re-recorded, retitled and rearranged from early 2000s Mid-Life Crisis Lyrics changed to make it more neutral/less personal but the DNA of realising that time was moving quickly when suddenly I'm driving a diesel engine MPV having gone from being single to a married dad-of-three in just over three years.
