Platform A is a collaboration between four of Toronto’s leading organizations in community-engaged arts: Arts for Children and Youth, Art Starts, Jumblies Theatre and SKETCH. These organizations have all emerged from grassroots initiatives and have grown to become key community builders in Toronto’s arts sector, engaging thousands of children, young people and adults annually through their diverse, innovative and accessible programming.

The Metro Morning host Morgan Passi interviewed some of the grant recipients during the A Show, a night of visual art, live music, literary performance, fashion, video, and community art projects that celebrated the artwork of over 60 different artist.

I Make Art! Art Starts PSA 2016

Maria Montejo (Deer clan) is a member of the Mam Jakaltec/Popti (Mayan) community of Indigenous people who reside in the Xajla territory of Guatemala. In addition to her formal schooling, Maria has been mentored from a young age by various Elders, Medicine people and Traditional Teachers on Turtle Island and from Central and South America. Maria has had the privilege of being exposed and participating in various ceremonies and traditional cultural practices that have fueled her passion to develop programming that will bridge the Newtonian/allopathic model of wellness and an Indigenous/multi-dimensional approach. Maria has worked for many years as a mental health and addictions treatment worker and provides education and consulting to various organizations and institutions in Canada. Maria currently facilitates the R.E.A.L School Youth Leadership and Native Wilderness Survival Skills Development program in various Indigenous communities around the world and is the manager of Dodem Kanonhsa’ Indigenous Education and Cultural Facility in Toronto.

Art Starts is a charitable non-profit using art to encourage social change in Toronto’s underserved communities.

Our One World music program allow youth artists to work with professional musicians & experiment with writing, performing, recording & producing original music.

The most recent One World Program took place at the Yorkdale Community Arts Centre in 2012.
