Without form or substance is a trilogy of  formless, dark, driving compositions by contrabassist Artstractos.  In form and content, each piece is improvised. The combination of contrabass, theremin, and metal plates create a complex soundscape. The three pieces on this recording offer a different view of the instruments used, spanning from solo contrabass to a howling theremin, to a percussive melding of metal plates and found objects.

This release features a series of improvisations inspired by the concept of artificial cranial enlargements. The practice of cranial modification, also known as cranial reshaping or head shaping, has a long history dating back to ancient civilizations. This album explores the bioarchaeology of this practice within the context of Mesoamerica, delving into the cultural, social, and biological significance of cranial modification in precolonial times.
 
The tracks on this album range from haunting and atmospheric to dark and sinister overtones, all with a foundation in the rich, sonorous harmonics of the contrabass.
