The candle cast shadows

I'm alone in a booth 
that was meant to hold two 
me and my shadows 
are all that remain 
plus six shots of vodka 
to cushion my brain 

My cigarette dies 
ashes hang in the air 
just like our love that

just one more drink

fumbling in my pockets 
to find taxi fare for that 
long journey home 
to a place we don't share 

My cigarette falls to 
the floor ......suicidal

Self esteem touched her

on the shoulder

when she was walking

circles through the pit of despair

and within that ebony darkness

she doubted she had felt anything

worthy of being touched

so deeply by her humble efforts

but then words appeared

on the rock walls around her

and a light of heavenly glory ]

illuminated her years

and she saw all the good

she had rendered in poetic form

etched in the stone face

“RECOVERY???”

It was so much fun
in the beginning
doing drug and alcohol
and I eagerly answered their call
never thinking I would fall

but then things got worse.
It took most of my income
my bills were not paid
and my addiction
became a curse
those I loved abandoned me

they could not stand to see
all my bad habits making
a monster out of me
I begged and borrowed
and stole from them
in ways that made them bleed
till I could no longer be trusted
and I got busted
and put in recovery

Recovery is more painful
than any other disease
drugs need to eat a hole
right through your soul
when they cannot be pleased

I fled from it too many times
and did some stints in prison
then violated my probation
as I sunk into Damnation...
with a Judge who wasn’t lenient
I begged but he wouldn’t listen
and back to prison I was driven.

I was sodomized and suffered
from convicts who dealt cruel blows
that broke my teeth and wounded me
Horrors no human should know
Horrors no human should know

I lost my house, my car, my life
by chasing highs to lows
and when I finally was released
I was forced to live
out there on the streets
begging for some change
to help me meet
addictions that
wouldn’t let go!

I am forty now, I lost my youth
I can’t even find a lover
And I’ve finally learned
the terrible truth
That I may not recover
The demon on my back is cruel
I cannot shake his claws
His goal is simply to break me
he tortures without a pause
recovery’s a useless cause
I’m just meat in his strong jaws...

They will bury me
in a potters field
In an unmarked grave
cause I could not yield
under a numbered stone
that will not reveal
my name in
Real Estate unreal

Just like peas in a pod....

A can of beer and a prayer
are very similar in many ways
you need both hands to get started
you open them with great expectations
they give you a bit of 
a lift when you are through
they are both filled with the spirit
one is fermented in a yeast that rises
and one rises to the firmanent of heaven
one is a lovely temptation
and one removes temptation in a lovely way
one has a head when poured
and one comes from a 
head that's feeling poor
both are forms of worship
one is a sacred drink to the common man
and the other is a sacred think
one can make you higher
and the other is to the maker on high
one is often found in brown glass
and the other is found near stained glass
I am sure there are more similarities
but I am suddenly very thirsty what with
all of this brew talk and spirited blessings
and I am praying that there is still one
can of Molson's left in the back of
my refrigerator cause it's late and all of
the stores are closed on Sundays for beer
It's the lord's day ya know...a time of prayer
thus the only alternative is a Hail Mary
and a glass of milk.....arrrrgggghhhhh!

seems I need to plan 
my shopping a little better

Manufractured Despair!

Somewhere there is a machine,
run by a somewhat lesser god,
turning out the misfits of society,
just to fill the quotas at bar's last calls,
to add to wallflowers 
at a dance's last songs,
and to the membership lists 
at lonely hearts clubs,

Not all things created are equal,
there walk among us many 
who are spurned
living out sad lives 
in a lonely haze
feeding on empty dreams 
and becoming anorexic
gazing longingly at lovers
and then going home to a twin bed
that holds anything but a pair.

Imagine the aches of
never knowing touch
sealed up orifices
and raisin shrunk genitals
beat into submission at times
but never caressed by another
the unwed homely who never have
a happy wedded home
the shy who shy away from love.

The unattractive who know the cruelty
of laughter from the other sex,
somewhere there must be a machine
cranking out irregulars
tailor made for the Missed her
and Miss understood's of sorrows
less than perfect plans.

but I don't understand
why anyone has to suffer
woman or man
with being so lonely 
their whole damned life

I have known the 
magnificence of love
I would not want to be 
as lonely as those manufactured 
by a machine run by a 
somewhat lesser god 
turning out the misfits of society

When I die let me fall
face first into the sky,
it is an old familiar place to me.

I see the sky in your eyes,

I've found the perfect girl
and I want to give her
a date to remember 
a horse drawn carriage,
a white steed with an ivory mane
His big brown eyes reflecting thanks
as we hand feed him carrots.

A carriage with a fringed top
and plush oversized benches,
stocked with a large cooler
of white and red wines,
a chardonnay day
or perhaps champagne.
Plus cheeses of provolone,
garlic, cheddar, mozerella,
gouda, pepperoni speckled
and bleu next to some
straw hats and a guitar.

Pulling up to her door
with that clippety-clop,
sound of yesterday
when romance was cherished,
and sweeping her
away from the doldrums
of modern life,
like a fair maiden of old.

Some Fabian style driver
to cart us along,
lest I fail to meet
her expectations,
then at least she could fantasize,
but most likely she would be lost
in our sweet conversing between
sharing sips of wine and hand feeding
each other succulent cheeses.

Then off to a private beach,
secluded and pristine with
two striped cabanas for changing
into less clothing on
a warm summer day.

We would relax in the tropical sun,
with only the sound of the ocean
intermingled with our sighs,
in two lounge chairs side by side
holding hands and watching time go by.

Soon enough the urge would strike us
to race into the restless surf,
then I would grace her flesh
with a warm massage of sun oils
to protect her lovely complexion,
in a gentlemanly fashion,

Then off we would dash
splashing and giggling
like children in the salty froth,
wet bodies embracing
just long enough for a sampling
of how it would feel,
if fate chose to grant us romance.

After we had frolicked to exhaustion,
we would climb together on a raft for two,
and float on our backs side by side,
gazing up at the blue of the sky,
when we were not gazing
into each others eyes.

Later we would paddle back shore,
a team effort, to get us back to
the picnic basket on ice that awaited us.

There we would share King crab salads
abundant with the oceans bounty
and finger sandwiches of thin sliced
prime rib or turkey breast
with lettuce and tomato,
as well as two generous
covered dishes of chilled
crème brulee for our dessert.
sharing smiles between ravenous bites.

Then off for a long stroll down the beach,
hand in hand, collecting sea glass,
just enough to form a heart of
multi-colored gems that we would glue
onto a white square of cardboard,
a souvenir of our summer date.

As dusk set in and sunset dappled
our paradise with oranges and golds,
I would set a driftwood fire ablaze,
and we would enjoy it's heat,
roasting marshmallows, making smores,
and watching the day dissolve before us.

By firelight I would lift my guitar,
and compose love songs for her,
encompassing our day together,
with hopes for other days to come.

Then back to the carriage which
would arrive at 11:00 p.m.
for a starlit ride home,
with the fringe top removed,
so that we could enjoy
our Nyte ride together.

Soft murmured conversation,
accompanied by the gentle
jounce of wagon wheels,
and steaming mugs of cappucino,
till we reached her front door,
where we would tentatively
blend eager lips into
a short farewell kiss,
that would joyously become
a long timeless blending
of two lonely souls.
just two lonely souls
at long last finding each other

Pulling away only
with great regret,
gazing deep into
each others eyes
with somewhat sated eyes,
as I slip her another ticket
to her next date to
paradise in my arms,

an evening of theater and dancing
on the following weekend.
Then she'd promise her attendance,
giving me one more delicious peck
on my lips and vanishing to
many happy dreams
beyond her door.

That door that I'm knocking on
hoping to enter her heart
and make myself a part of her love
it's all I'm dreaming of

Just Below The Surface Beauty Awaits.

She was a wee bit homely looking
having not yet budded into full beauty,
but mother nature had graced her face
with possibilities as yet discovered.

Fate also chipped in with a lonely young man,
who stammered his way through an invite
to the school prom while staring at her shoes,
and she breathlessly replied, "I would love to."

And so it was within the racks
of the Salvation Army store's
selection of used prom dresses,
that she found her chance to bloom,
in a long and lovely gown of red,
that made her see herself in a new light.

Then two of her friends who
excelled at makeup and hairdo's
went to work just before the prom,
accentuating her eyes,
adding scarlet fullness to her lips
an a pink blush to her pale cheeks.

Then the mirror graced her with what
would be a sleeping beauty no more,
as she stood staring for many long minutes
in awe and trembling at how a few accessories
and the encouragement of another lonely soul
had turned her from a wallflower into a rose.

She danced that night with more partners
then she could ever have dreamed of,
most of the boys in her class gave her a whirl,
astonished at the transformation of one
they seldom had ever given much thought to.

But she was also gracious,
saving the best songs
and the last dance for
the awkward young man who
had made it all possible,
and then later when he dropped
her off at home she thanked him
with a kiss he had only
ever dreamed about.

There is beauty to be found
even in the most humble
of places and faces,
by looking with a gentler eye
at what is not always
apparent in the rough.

Loneliness as well
is not mandatory,
the garden of love
holds many wallflowers
that when cared for
can be orchids
of the rarest kind
to brighten another's world.

my blood was molten metal
but then came May a lovely lass
she stole my soul and ran
across green fields of dandelions
you see she had a plan

her back was warmed from early sun

and in her whispered promises

She was my teller
and I wanted to tell her
she was as pretty
as a gal can be
She even handled my money
like we were married
counting it out so carefully.

With long auburn hair
and eyes of blue,
I did a lot more banking
then I usually do
hoping she would see
that I was hoping
she was into me…..

I didn’t carry much money
it went to my new honey
every chance I could
and I dressed to impress
always wearing my best
hoping that she would,
take more interest in me
than my bank ever gave.

I longed to ask her out
but it just wasn’t the place
with cameras all around
and her managers face
jealous of what I craved.

So I sent her a note
through the drive-up tube,
hoping that would be a way
to let my feelings intrude
with a couple of tickets
to the town’s hottest show,
and my note held all my thoughts
I wanted her to know….

It said….."I’d like to open up
a joint account
with your heart,
sharing a bond of love
that guarantees
we never will part
We can watch it
growing annually
if you’ll just invest
in a night to see if I can
offer you interest,
But if you're truly indebted
to someone else’s share,
I understand completely
but I had to declare,
all my interest in you

The very next day when I went
banking at the ATM
I just put cash in the tube
and then I pushed the button
to let it send
but when she saw it was me
her lovely smile gave me comfort

who gives thanks to that bank
that loaned me, my favorite teller

The Gift Of Time.

This is our story,
her name was Lori,
and it was love at first
sight for her… for me,

I was working real hard
at a produce stand
When my boss sent me
off to do another errand,
at a greenhouse he owned
two blocks away,
on a bright and sunny
September day…..

The radio was blaring
the hit song, " Hot blooded.”
When I first laid eyes on her
and she left my soul flooded
With a feeling that I’d never
felt so strongly before
that same feeling in her eyes …
when she walked out that door.

Chorus-

With eyes of baby blue,
a golden mane of blonde hair,
My whole world disappeared
with only her standing there,
Then she smiled at me
in such a way that I knew,
That she would be mine
before the week was through…

Next few days saw us
working together a lot,
And what once was a job
became my favorite spot,
Standing close to her potting
flowers that weren’t as sweet ,
as the looks that she gave me,
till our work was complete.

Then she sent me a note that made
my wishes come true,
She wrote “I don’t know much
about love but I know I love you,”
Then we spent nights together
after our workday was through,
Sharing our burst of love at first sight,
that came out of the blue.

My house was struck by lightning this past week and so I am without my recording studio as well as many other household electrical devices. We are fine but I will be down for a week or more until electrical breaks are repaired and devices that blew out are replaced or I buy new ones.


The Hollow-Days Of Addiction.
(A Christmas message for all )

Christmas has come back again
For the third year in a row
And we haven't seen 
our precious son
Ever since he had to go
To jail then off to rehab
Then violating 
two probation's
the court ordered no contact
So we've had no conversations
Cause he'd abused 
his Mom so much
Leaving her soul terrified
and came after me so angrily
Every time that he got high
we both tried in 
every way we could
But then we had to say goodbye....


Christmas on drugs and alcohol 
Was never a good mix
Hanukkah plus cruel addictions
Just brings candle sadly lit
Santa Claus and faith in God
Are not enough to bring a fix
Only he can save himself
No one else can heal his needs
That have made both our hearts bleed
while he spends his hollow days
Struggling to find ways to succeed.


He'll spend another Christmas
In sober living all alone
Far away from both his parents
Knowing that he can't come home
And it cuts us deeply to the bone
Cause our tough love is no fun
But drugs and alcohol have stolen
Our most precious son
Until he proves that he is cured
and his addictions are all done.

So if you too are like our son
Suffering the same afflictions
I hope this poem moves you to flee
Back to the true life 
you've been missing
Because those who 
love you can't survive
Living with the endless friction
Of your lies and thefts 
And thier hopes left swept
Underneath your opposition
Your loved ones all must separate
themselves from your positions
Of your loving highs even as they cry
Over your tragic conditions
Leaving you alone 
while they sit at home
Praying for you and each one wishing
That you will give all that you've lost
Some serious recognition
Before you end up lying 
Under a marble inscription
that leaves them all 
Without your love
Another victim of addiction
so many others just like you
