Russia's Saint Petersburg Disco Spin Club arises on the Teardrop label run by Lovebirds with "I Need It", a collaboration with Moscow's Lipelis which is undoubtedly one of the more anthemic slices through the space between disco and house to have emerged in recent times. While his name isn't easy to slip off the tongue, SPDSC has been steadily building up a classy rep amidst the disco house fraternity, with a notable inclusion on a recent Tusk Wax 12", but "I Need It" might be his best work yet. This is a track that has everything; thick groove, heavily filtered stabs arranged in a playful manner, a killer vocal hook that weaves in an out of focus and a pleasant deviation into twisting analogue acid. Lovebirds are on remix duties too, along with Iron Curtis under his Leaves alias.

Saint Petersburg Disco Spin Club & Lipelis — A1 I Need It (Original Mix) — TD006 12"

Having nurtured the precious and insular little flower that is Youandewan over the course of a number of remixes and headline slots at their own label parties around the world, Hypercolour now allow Leeds based Ewan Smith to flourish into his first full release in more than a year.

Appropriately arriving on the cultured HypeLTD, the four tracks find him moping in dreamy
melodies, lazy underwater beats and soothing circular rhythms.

Opener ‘Disarray’ features the producer’s trademark knocking beats under liquid synths that
plunge down into melancholy before rising up through the horizon like a mid-winter sun. A
female coo adds more heavy heartedness in the subtlest of ways and Smith manages to coax
some sweet sadness from his TR303 before ‘Awn’ stands a bit more proud. The pads are lush,
the 707 percussion feather light and the beats splutter and stutter as another deft sample adds
an element of heavenly vocal purity.

On the flip, ‘Undrstnd’ has a bed of buried deep kicks à la Fred P, the light dusting of percussion
comes from off in the distance and eventually an untethered, oversized square bassline sprays
about and starts a chain reaction where pools of synths implode and explode in vast underwater
caves. ‘0500’ is another of Smith’s more direct cuts, frictionless kick-clap combos echo off to
infinity below you as panning, spiralling synths and lush splashes of hi hats work to suspend you right in the midst of it all. On the cusp of breaking through since forever, this EP will likely be the assured sonic statement that sees Youandewan properly enter the discerning public’s conscious at large.

"Artwork were formed in 2007 from the ashes of bands you've never heard of, playing the genres you never heard. The duo have since decided to put the nonsense of real instruments behind them and embrace the computers and synthesizers that had soundtracked their early teens and forays into club life.

Initially meeting at university and bonding over Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon' and Jon Michel Jarre, they seemed a good fit; one was a classically trained musician, the other a tinkerer of technology. Dropping out of Uni and armed with a copy of Cool Edit, they inducted themselves into the bedroom studio revolution via Soundblaster Live, furthering their theory that wine equals productivity when making blippy, repetitive Rebirth loops way into the early hours. From there, their sound began to take shape around chiming melodies, massive PWM pads, old drum machines and a firm belief that Detroit Techno is dead good...

Early experiments were inspired by the the first wave of French House, Tears For Fears back catalogue on repeat and late 90's Trance. Experiments which would later to be described by Rob Da Bank as a mixture of Twin Peaks and Pet Shop Boys. The odd small release gained humble note and having pressed on, Artwork were given a more recent break when Late Of The Pier kindly released their remix of Bathroom Gurgle. Now they are taking saw and square waves more seriously, they are remixing anyone big and small"
