Teaching Artist, Estefania Gallo-Gonzales, appeared on KQBH radio station where she displays her prowess in music mixing. Gallo- Gonzales used this expertise  in music to teach students at artworxLA’s Design and Media Arts Academy how to develop sound collages made up of interviews, songs, and found sounds like older digital media.

artworxLA students developed sound collages made up of interviews, songs, and found sounds like older digital media under the guidance of Teaching Artist, Estefania Gallo-Gonzales. The sound collages create a soundscape for what an anti-racist future will sound like or indicate a path that we can all collectively take. Students drew inspiration from historical and contemporary protest music and Afrofuturist radio, music, and media.

I chose Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Borwn, and Steven Izenour’s I Am A Monument from 1972. Seeing this drawing looked to me like an event recognizing itself, and made me think about how places or events can be important to only a handful of people. It reminded me of a quote of “What we do in life echoes for eternity,” which was actually from an actor Russel Crowe playing Maximus. So, I made a song that has that same feeling.

Abraham, inspired by I Am A Monument by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour

The artwork I represented is Michael Heizer's Double Negative. This photograph was taken by the artist Gianfranco Gorgoni. These trenches that Michael Heizer dug into the earth gave me an empty and abandoned feeling. I picture myself standing at the edge, hearing my echo, so that is what inspired my music.

Heidi, inspired by Michael Heizer's Double Negative

The title of the art piece I chose for this project is JG Offset by Tacita Dean, an English visual artist who often works in film. The reason I chose this particular piece is because the view of the horizon, and the contrast of the picture looked very nice and gloomy to me, more like a mysterious looking picture, and I knew right away I had to work with this piece.

artworxLA combats LA's high school dropout rate with a long-term, sequential arts program. artworxLA, formally The HeArt Project, is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides educational resources, connects students to a supportive network of mentors and cultural partners and invests human and financial resources to ensure their success. Our goal is to engage LA’s most vulnerable students with rigorous art programs.

artworxLA envisions a world where all students graduate from high school, thrive into adulthood, and contribute to society with their unique creativity. artworxLA aims to connect teens with art and the community that inspires them to stay in school and use creativity to rise from difficult circumstances. 

A prevalent reason students give for dropping out of high school is lack of engagement. A key engager to reinvigorating students in their education is the arts. We have seen the impact it has had on so many students, and we know art works.
