An intimate American Roots music performance by Elizabeth Butler in collaboration with Arun Shenoy

ELIZABETH BUTLER is a native of Savannah, Georgia, but has lived in Texas for the past twenty years. The talented singer-songwriter first began playing guitar at the age of eleven, and within a few years was part of her church’s music ministry, as well as playing for various youth groups.

She recorded her first demo tape of original songs in 1982, and after an adventurous musical journey that took her from playing in coffee shops to being a member of the country/folk duo Running Home, she embarked on her solo journey with the release of her critically acclaimed debut album Love & Loss & Stuff Like That in 2014.

In Butler’s words, Love & Loss & Stuff Like That is a reading of diaries, a hearing of confessions about the joys and heartbreaks that make us both unique in our stories, and alike in the expressions of matters of the heart.

Since then she has taken on a new course of releasing singles on a regular basis that has resulted in a recording of her composition, “Lullaby” in 2016.

On hearing an early demo of her next composition “If I Knew”, GRAMMY Award nominated Artist and Producer ARUN SHENOY, quite taken by the music and already a fan of Elizabeth’s work, proposed an alternate version of the song based on a more intimate styled production drawing influences from some of Tracy Chapman’s earlier work, and varied inspiration from the likes of Steve Ray Vaughan, John Mayer and Firehouse.

The resulting single titled “If I Knew (feat. Arun Shenoy)” was released on July 01, 2017 by Narked Records.

For this ReVision, I chose an iconic song that has had a great influence on me and my artwork throughout my lifetime. Featuring a west coast-style songwriting balladry, their sound was something I immediately connected with from the very first time I heard “Joy And Pain” on the radio as a child.

Often referred to as the “Black Grateful Dead” for their loyal cross-generational fanbase, Maze was formed in San Francisco, California in the late 70s, fronted by the Philly-raised songwriter and former gospel singer, Frankie Beverly.

Originally called Raw Soul, the group changed their name to Maze upon the recommendation of Beverly’s mentor—as well as a major catalyst for their meteoric ascension in popularity—Marvin Gaye.

Featuring conventional instrumentation of this era for an R&B ensemble—Electric Bass, Guitar, and Fender Rhodes, Oberheim OB-X brass—including innovative use of the—then-new—Roland CR-78 CompuRhythm Drum Machine.

For as much as they have written and recorded timeless songs and records, you really have not fully experienced their spiritual mastery until you've seen Maze Feat. Frankie Beverly live in concert.

Story behind the song:

“We’ll Find A Way” is a song that is etched in passion. So much so that we are releasing it to the public and we hope it inspires people to find a way to rise above all their circumstances and the problems currently affecting them. The song was created in a sea of passion in about an hour by three members of the D2D Underground team. While sitting in the studio, Matthew Shell, distraught by his mother having a lump in her breast that was just biopsied, started playing his Spanish guitar unlike anything he had ever done before over an orchestration him and his mother had worked on months before. So much passion was flowing from the strings that another member Kenny McNeil was moved to write a song to capture the passion that was in the air. Kenny McNeil was so inspired that he started envisioning the song and writing the lyrics right on the spot. Feeling all this passion, another member JJ who was in the studio came up with a quote “Without pain there can be no hope.” Kenny’s son was in the studio at the time and JJ had the idea to have the young man say the quote. Kenny was so inspired and moved that he went into the sound booth and started singing like none of us have ever heard him before. Kenny, JJ, and Matt, members of the D2D underground family, finished the song and called Matt’s mother to dedicate it to her. She was so moved that she listened to the song over and over. Then the news came the very next day (two days earlier than expected) that the lump was benign. To God be the glory. To all of our fans and friends, we hope this song will inspire you to find a way to rise above all your pain, fears, and problems.
