Aurora Engine’s single, ‘Miniature Self’, from her upcoming debut album, ‘Secret Knock’, sets captivating storytelling against a sonic backdrop of harp, ethereal vocals, synths and beats. 

Written, produced and performed by Aurora Engine (Deborah Shaw), ‘Miniature Self’ explores the self imposed ‘smallness’ women often adopt in order to navigate a patriarchal society.  

Hailing from working class County Durham, Shaw reflects on her own cultivation of smallness growing up, learning to blend in, shape-shift, people-please and mould to the shape of others’ needs. The song explores her own journey, emerging from a small working class town where phrases such as ‘reel your neck in’ and ‘don’t get too big for your boots’ were common (and directed most to women and girls) into a career as a composer and songwriter frequently embedding feminist themes in her work.

Disquiet Junto Project 0572: Rhythm Kit
The Assignment: Make a beat that someone else will add to.

Note: This project is the first of a two-parter. You don’t need to participate in both, and you can easily participate in the second one (next week) even if you don’t participate in the first one.

Instruction: Record a beat with the intension that someone other than yourself will add something to it at a later date. It’s preferable that you record something that lasts between one and three minutes, but it’s also fine to record something shorter with the intention that someone will loop it — or something longer, for that matter.

I always like when one of the more beat-oriented prompts comes up because it gets me to think about rhythm tools, which I'm fairly inconsistent with. 

I thought I would would use my modular synth to generate the beat starting with a trio of samplers triggered by dividing and multiplying clock dividers. The resulting three samples are then routed through some signal manipulation: a wasp filter, stereo delay and Make Noise Morphagene. I also had some fun with a sample and hold which controls the pitch CV of one of the samples.

Crazy track here. A synth odyssey comprising of 2 tracks (2021 + 2022) mixed together using Traktor 3/Kontrol S8. Way too many synths to mention (don't even own some of them anymore). Crave is prominent with random arps, Cycles, Blofeld (sharp, distorted sounds ca 7 min.), ER-1, Mininova and a Microbrute are among some of the sounds that i recognize but no technical notes were made which is a shame. Just having fun and exploring the archives. No samples whatsoever in this downtempo groove:)
