Samuel Nobles is a Philadelphia-based composer and performer. Primarily a pianist and bassist, he has composed for a variety of films and shows, including the IFC feature film “Greener Grass,” and TruTV’s network television show, “Adam Ruins Everything.” Samuel has scored films that premiered at SXSW, Sundance, and Cannes. With his newest piano LP, “How Sweet You Are,” Samuel celebrates pockets of beauty, love, and grace, both in the natural world and in the people we meet. Samuel recorded the album in his home studio; it features not only the resonance of his muted piano, but also it’s clicks, it’s creaks, and the occasional passing car.

Ninalty - Froasty Peaks EP

The composition “Outmoded” is a kind of romance, a tribute to old style music with more classical chanting motifs. A fairly quick change of chords and a distinct, memorable melody make this work stand out from the entire collection. The main theme reminds me of Baroque music - and, in my opinion, would sound good on a harpsichord. Hence the name: “Outmoded” - old-fashioned, outdated.
 
The middle part of the composition, on the contrary, is designed in a more modern minimalist style. It's a real mantra, fixating on a limited sequence of harmonies and virtually no leading melodic line.
 
For me, Outmoded combines two musical eras, two different compositional techniques: melodic and minimalistic. And my main idea was to show the connection between them, to combine two radically different sounds into a single completed work.
