The opening hours from a very special night of intricate, textural dance music, featuring three of the thought-leading producers in the style. In the first two and a half hours, I explored some of the extrema of this style as I have come to love it, ranging from colorful washes to highly structured percussive patterns and broad vocalic melodies, teeing up the energy for Sven, Aepiel, and Lyli to whisk the gathered away.

It's been nearly a decade since the release of Solomon & Sadao's "White Sage", the public debut of Alex Blackstock and Dan Sherman's collaborative identity. Since then, the two have continued to play together, but rarely remember to press record.

On the cusp of the summer solstice in secluded Clipper Cove, encircled by a few dozen anchored sailboats, S&S pressed the button and captured a mix that can only be described as quintessential to the project's roots.

Getting back into the groove with some rolling hills, space scapes, and minimal heaters. I really enjoyed pulling together a picture with both new and old tunes, as well as some old Berlin vinyls that haven't seen a turn in awhile.  

Koryo has physical and philosophical significance in both Korean culture and my own life. The aspect that helped this mix come into being is the Koryo tenet that, in the pursuit of any art, one has never, and can never, "arrive". That there is no destination, only walking well.

AB027 - Koryo

Prior to this past year's deep dive into the softer world of ambient dub textures, I used to make mixes like this. I woke up feeling like it was about time to revisit higher energy melodic deep house, for a few reasons:

- This is way more representative of what my live performances sound like, particularly in my collaboration with Dan as Solomon & Sadao. Floor oriented, melody rich, built more for the body than the brain.

- I haven't stopped collecting and enjoying this style of music, and boy is there a backup of nice tracks to share.

- It's almost time for Burning Man!

Dark, challenging, emotive. I started working through the concept of this set on the floor of Berlin Tegel airport at 4am, and couldn't wait to play these tracks for adventurous ears. After six weeks off the decks, I can't tell you how happy I was to reconnect with my friend-family for a night of impossible magic on the Farm. Thank you to everyone who made it a reality. AB002 - Halloween On The Farm

For the close of the year, the launch of a new series.

Techno exposes the gills and guts of the human emotional spectrum. It is unconcerned with dialing in on positive rhythmic undulations. It is foremost an accurate genre, closer to portrait photography in nature than impressionist painting. It's a style that is well understood in Europe, and scarcely in North America. For these reasons, the inaugural ABX consists almost entirely of records hauled back in Lufthansa overhead bins with no intention that I'd ever play them out in American clubs.

ABX will run in parallel with the AB mix series, as a channel for the experimental, the extreme, and the extraordinary.

The listening experience, when it comes to electronic music, is often one of listing into and out of your senses. At one moment hyper aware of the strength of gravity pulling the soles of your feet into the ground, and at the next moment, the idea of gravity is preposterous.
 
April is an ode to this simultaneity, and also to two physicists (Einstein and de Broglie) who rather cavalierly postulated the wave-particle duality of matter in 1905 and 1924 respectively. Whether or not they liked to dance, I think they'd agree that our finest experiences are not without both a tangible and ethereal component.
