Here is the 4th demo of songs that I've written in my weekly songwriting group. The prompt for this was "submission" and the song is called "A Life That I Love". This one felt special :)

Here is my submission 
For a life that I love
I’ve been looking for permission 
Is this how I get some? 

I wrote up all the reasons 
That I could find
Documented all the seasons 
Of my life

And I’ll be waiting by my mail box
Every night
For an unmarked envelope that tells me 
What you decide 

About my life
I want to be extraordinary in 
My life
And enjoy the ordinary 
It’s my life 

I did a meditation 
Last Saturday
It asked if I were dying  
What would I change 

I though of all the things to list
I couldn’t decide 
I saw a cup of tea and 
A sun setting bright 

So I’ll be sitting in my garden

While the steam is rising and the air is sweet

Ich wohne in einem alten Pfarrhaus – oben, im ersten Stock.
Unten ist noch das Büro der Kirchengemeinde, und seit einiger Zeit hängt dort ein großes Banner:
„Selbst denken!“
Darauf der Reformator Johannes Pistorius, der vor fast 500 Jahren hier in Nidda wirkte.
Als ich diesen Spruch zum ersten Mal las, hat mich das seltsam berührt.
Wollen sie mir sagen, ich solle endlich selbst denken?
Oder ist das vielleicht der Versuch, in unserer Zeit wieder etwas anzustoßen – ein Gespräch, ein Innehalten, ein Nachfragen?
Aus diesen Gedanken ist ein Song entstanden:
„Selbst denken (Ballade aus dem Pfarrhaus)“ –
eine kleine Hommage an das Zweifeln, das Fragen, das Menschsein.
Und vielleicht auch ein Lächeln über all die großen Parolen, die uns das Denken beibringen wollen.
🎧🎥 Das Video dazu habe ich mit eigenen Fotos aufgenommen. Ich lade euch ein, hineinzuhören – und vielleicht ein bisschen mitzudenken. 😉

I live in an old parish house – upstairs, on the first floor.
Downstairs is still the parish office, and for some time now, a large banner has been hanging there:
“Think for yourself!”
It shows the Reformer Johannes Pistorius, who lived here in Nidda almost 500 years ago.
When I first read that slogan, I felt oddly touched.
Do they really think we don’t think for ourselves?
Or is it meant as a spark – a way to start a conversation again in our times?
Out of that thought came this song:
🎶 “Think for Yourself (Ballad from the Parish House)” –
a little homage to doubt, to questioning, to being human.
And maybe also a smile at all those grand slogans that try to teach us how to think.

Selbst denken (Ballade aus dem Pfarrhaus)
Strophe 1:
Ich wohn’ im alten Pfarrhaus, die Zeit steht stille hier,
drunten im Büro die Kirche, die Akten sind noch aus Papier.
Ein Banner unterm Fenster – Pistorius schaut verlorn,
„Selbst denken!“ ruft’s daneben, und ich frag mich, was das soll.
Strophe 2:
Meinen die da unten wirklich, dass ich das je vergaß?
Dass Denken eine Pflicht ist, und nicht ein off’nes Glas?
Denn Freiheit ist kein Slogan, kein Wort im Kirchenraum,
sie lebt nur, wenn wir zweifeln – an Dogma, Macht und Traum.
Refrain:
Selbst denken – ja, das wär was Schönes,
wenn’s nicht bloß Zier und Schriftzug wär.
Denn wer befiehlt, wie frei ich bin,
der hat vom Denken gar nicht viel gehört.
Strophe 3:
Der Alte da von Nidda, der hat wohl anders g’sprochen,
kein Lautsprecher der Wahrheit, kein Opportunist, eher unerschrocken.
Er trug die Pest und Zweifel, den Schmerz, das stille Ruh’n,
ließ Liebe stärker wirken als jedes „nur so tun“.
Strophe 4:
Die Leute fahr’n vorüber, das Banner ruft im Wind,
manch einer nickt zustimmend, manch andre schaut geschwind.
Vielleicht bleibt was zurück, ein leises Unbehagen –
vielleicht war das der Sinn – vielleicht auch nur ein Fragen.
Refrain:
Selbst denken – ja, das wär was Schönes,
doch Freiheit riecht nach Mensch, nicht Amt.
Vielleicht war’s das, was er gemeint hat –
und nicht, dass man Parolen pflanzt.
Coda (leise, nachdenklich):
Ich wohn’ im alten Pfarrhaus, da rauscht die Zeit vorbei,
vielleicht denkt Gott ja selbst – und lacht dabei.
