We Release Jazz is very happy to present its fourth release (following Ryo Fukui’s Scenery and Mellow Dream and the soundtrack of Le Cercle Rouge by Eric Demarsan), the official reissue of 1974’s Stuff Combe 5 + Percussion, a hard to find soul jazz jewel from a cast of illustrious jazzmen led by glorious Swiss drummer Stuff Combe. The limited edition 180g vinyl LP is mastered at half speed, cut at Emil Berliner Studios, housed in a black and silver Stoughton tip-on sleeve, and comes with liner notes.

Recorded in Geneva, Stuff Combe 5 + Percussion finds Stuff Combe conducting an all-star ensemble consisting of Bob Jacquillard on bass, Francy Boland (The Chet Baker Quintet, arranger for Count Basie, Benny Goodman and the list goes on) on piano and electric piano, bebop and hard-bop legend Benny Bailey on trumpet, and Tony D'Adario on saxophone. The sessions ooze with funk, spaced out sounds, breathtaking solos, and moments of absolute collective wizardry. It’s soul jazz at its best with sci-fi and bossa excursions!

Born in Bern in 1924, Etienne Stephen Jean Gustave "Stuff" Combe had a wonderfully prolific career, playing all over Europe and the US and working with Buck Clayton, Bill Coleman, Stan Getz, Kenny Clarke, Oscar Pettiford , Art Taylor, Dizzy Reece, and Lucky Thompson just to name a few. He passed away in 1986, leaving behind a legacy that cemented him as one of the most important musicians in the history of Swiss jazz.

This is my second exploration into the 170 bpm fusion of drum´n´bass with dub techno, ambient and dub. It´s bass music primarily for listening and imaginary dancefloors. Since we currently have to make do with mind traveling, I thought I create a little helper. It surely takes you away someplace, if you give in to it, it´s quite cinematic.

The first one from 2017 proved to be a timeless mix for which I continue to receive favorable feedback. This one is even more laid back and further away from the mainstream idea of what Drum´n´Bass is supposed to be. I have written a few words accompanying the first mix, which are still valid for the sequel, so if you´re interested in the sound and the concept, check that out. 

I´m very happy to have found a way to prominently include a track by Rhythm & Sound, who are obviously a great inspiration for this whole affair. The sound I´m searching for here is also a neighbor of tribal halftime dnb, which was actually hard to keep out of the selection, because it works well on a certain level, but at the same it is mostly very dark and also too upfront (I have actually compiled a second playlist as a sequel to my Tribalizm mix from 10 years ago, so that might come up next.) I also tried to steer away from Ambient dnb tracks that just arent Dub enough.

Rising

Woodwork set a mandate when the label relaunched in 2016. 
The policy was to include all musical influences and genres, 
rejecting adherence to classifications and divisions, and 
honour music as a universal language. The hope is that by 
curating music collectively as a workshop, new forms would 
eventually emerge from this eclectic melting-pot, thus forming 
a unique sonic platform, daring to execute the unexpected 
with no shame. This 69th release 'Slowly Does It', fully 
achieves this mandate and validates the very ethos that 
Woodwork stands for.

Riddim Fernandez has proven himself a tireless, limitless producer. With several other releases this year on Squinty Bass and Black Fox, in addition to three other fully-stocked EPs in this series for Woodwork. His vision, abilities, and output seem to expand exponentially. While we've seen his music skirt the realms of bass music, dubstep, drum n bass, halftime, dancehall and hip hop, the sound dive just goes deeper with each new batch of stunning works, and this time we have nowhere we can place these songs but in a category that is completely their own.

'Slowly Does It', 'Slow Burn Into Orbit', and 'Smooth Groove' operate on some fringe groove between downtempo deep house, lo fi beats, and ambient dub. 'Embrace the Abyss', 'She Said She Lovin' the Flow' and 'Fluid Moves' find layered melodies, sweeping atmospheric cliffhanger 
breakdowns, and beats that range from mid tempo dubstep, subdued half-time trap, and hip hop swirling and swapping throughout.

The combination of bold, adventurous styling, signature sonic construction and destruction, and a fresh look at every influence injected into his work, Riddim Fernandez accomplishes 
something that few others ever really manage to such a degree - crafting a totally personal style of music.
