Channeling inspiration from composers like Philip Glass, he takes an arpeggiated  spectral choir through a maze of rapidly changing drum patterns. Half-time rhythms and reckless hi-hats from Chicago guide a supernatural film score over bleak 808s. A moody moment for the club, or an eerie moment on the screen, it’s a wonderful reworking of minimalism, and a magical new addition to the label’s catalog.

Sami Baha’s third album, Mistarget, marks the inaugural entry for Amel’s catalogue, a new- generation label he co-founded in 2024 promoting a non-sectarian approach to what being a label is about. The EP distills Baha’s diverse influences as a globetrotter. Eclectic but effortlessly digestible, Mistarget blends dreamy synth backdrops and hip- hop adjacent beats with techniques borrowed from the post- clubbing world Baha is close to. Featuring his signature style of acute refinement-meets- unfamiliar detours, Mistarget is an exercise in sonic detournement, shaping familiar sounds into new forms. Club atmospheres and crescendos alternate with moments of repose, weaving intricate textures and palettes into an unpredictable sonic kaleidoscope. 

Reality kicks in with Hunt’s synth stabs and frenetic drum patterns, paving the way for an almost claustrophobic melody and Baha’s signature deeper- than-life bass progressions. 

An almost glam riff coming out of nowhere, dissolving as quickly as it came. Pressing, haunting drums. A flute, sampled screams. A synth refrain comes and goes, only apparently without a pattern. Mistarget, Sami Baha third Album’s first single and title track, feels like being in a chase —An aetherial, deconstructed take on trip hop sensibilities meeting trap bravado. 

Cutting through the calm, Sato is a triumphant aggregation of noise and pixelated drums, where the purest underground rave attitude meets a deconstructed take on techno’s most familiar tropes. 

Step into Mistarget world. A tapestry of ambient sounds in Passages opens up the record. A lost fragment of a soundtrack for a film that never existed. 

Spiraling vocal samples drive Mistarget’s most willfully raw moment, Dogru. An interplay of guitar and drums that is Baha’s most evident nod to the beat-making side of his practice. 

Bakar Feek, featuring Vocalist Almaazz feels like an alt- acoustic take on an 80s Istanbul midsummer neo-pop dream. 

With Aml, we are gently rocked back to Baha’s beautiful dream-esque arrangements,a rainy-day combination of glowing, airy synths, stuttering percussion, and a relaxed downtempo arrangement.

Xiao Quan is a DJ and prolific producer stemming from the clubs of São Paulo, after relocating from the Chinese Shenzen region. A rather mysterious character in the underground community, the artist specializes in exuberant mixtures of techno, grime, tarraxinha, and traditional Chinese elements fueled by a contemporary approach to hybrid club music. His tracks ended up in a whole multitude of labels (Clan Destine, scared2sleep, Clube Tormenta, Sirens, Spite) and EPs, such as the memorable collaborative EP on Unizone with DJ Loser.

Creator and curator of the Paulistano Taipei - ok party, in 2017 Xiao Quan founded the independent creative network and label called Dissolute, releasing works by musicians from all over the world as well as two various artists comps, one of which - as well as the precious Mergulho EP by LAZA - came with a stunning piece of artwork by Gabriel Massan. The Berlin-based digital artist, researching material's plasticity and reflectivity in aseptic, abstract environments, is also responsible for the visual component of Quan's latest effort, Connection EP.

Releasing on May 13th on the Hangzhou-based outcome FunctionLab run by the DJ/producer/vocalist GG Lobster, the EP comes at a point in the label's history in which the focus is steadily being shifted from a local artist base to a wider one, as confirmed by recent outings by the likes of 011668 & S280F, Yikii, and T5UMUT5UMU. Connection EP, in particular, is a melting pot of styles and rhythms split into 7 tracks ranging from 120 to 130 bpm, each shaped up to be the perfect club tool, as versatile as impactful.

The track we premiere today, i.e. the closing piece called Half Moon Kick, is a raw, straight-to-the-point composition employing Latin drum patterns, multiple vocal fillers, a distorted, minimal bassline, all framed by swirling and metallic percussions. Another hit by the iconic swag godfather Xiao Quan, be sure not to miss the whole EP out next week via digital download. Enjoy!
