Souleance return with a brand new EP for First Word Records. Following the huge success of 'La Beat Tape' in early 2013, the French duo have been busy in the studio preparing a 6-tracker aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Souleance is the result of the partnership between producer Fulgeance (check his new LP 'Cubes') and DJ Soulist of legendary Paris event What The Funk. In 2008 they released their debut EP 'Le Monde' which along with follow up 'Le Plaisir' is one of First Word's all-time bestsellers. 2012 saw their debut LP 'La Belle Vie' released to widespread critical acclaim, winning them fans including Gilles Peterson, Lefto and Laurent Garnier. With an eye-catching live show now up and running (check their recent charismatic appearance on Boiler Room for evidence) Souleance are going from strength to strength.
The new EP is exactly what you'd expect from Souleance, taking in 80s influenced electro (Brotha, Broobecker & Vacances), audacious sample flips (Georgian Kiss), infectious-grooved hip hop (Mais Um) and up-tempo tropical beats (Tropicalidad). All six tracks are guaranteed club winners that only Souleance could deliver.

A New Moanin'

WAAN represents the musical marriage of seasoned saxophonist Bart Wirtz and keyboard wiz Emiel van Rijthoven. As a pair of self-confessed tech nerds hailing from The Netherlands, their bromance was a slow burning one, but nevertheless their eventual collaboration fulfilled a dream that they’d both held close since first working together back in 2010.

Omi, the second single to be taken from their debut album Echo Echo, has something of an Ethiopique feel, largely thanks to the low slung groove laid down by guest drummer Jimmi Hueting and the dark, crunchy bass line of Kasper Kalf. The track sprung to life via a piano melody that was eventually, and organically, transformed into alto sax and bass clarinet. The use of those instruments gave Omi a kind of Arabic or Middle Eastern flavour to add to the already steamy musical stew. The duo then sprinkled on icy synths to cool things down somewhat and give the piece a more electronic and club friendly feel which complements the hot Afro horns that ride the rhythm throughout. And finally, to add the finishing touches to this heady concoction, Emiel and Bart visited renowned beat maker Frank Wienk, better known as BinkBeats, who not only added his trademark percussion but also blended a little vibraphonette (a special kind of Italian vibraphone) into this mystic brew to create a unique and cosmic outernational sound!

With influences as disparate as Floating Points, BadBadNotGood and Eddie Harris, Echo Echo is far more complex than just being a dance music influenced jazz record. Co-producer Oscar de Jong, of Kraak & Smaak fame, encouraged the pair to play freely as part of a jazz group and then add the electronic elements. As a result the album owes as much to Duke Ellington and Lalo Schiffrin as it does NERD and The Eurythmics!

BBE Music are proud to reissue one of the most elusive and sought-after Afro-Funk LPs of all time: SON OF AFRICA, by REMI KABAKA.

Now a proud 85 years of age and enjoying retirement in America, Remi was the cornerstone of British West African music in the 50s, 60s and 70s, along with Ginger Oloronso Johnson, Fela Kuti and others. But while Ginger played mambo and cha cha cha in Soho clubland and Fela released his early ‘highlife jazz’ records on the Melodisc label, Remi Kabaka was fully ensconced in the UK Rock world, playing sessions and live shows with The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and countless others.

As the 60s became the 70s, Kabaka developed yet another string to his bow: the development of a UK based West African Funk scene, that found its genesis in the legendary Osibisa, but with an influence and an inspiration that spilled over into every contemporary Brit Funk band from Cymande and the Equals to The Average White Band, Matata and beyond.

SON OF AFRICA was originally released by Chris Blackwell’s Island records in 1976, to little acclaim, very few reviews, and with almost no promotion. African music was a hard sell when the 70s Black British record market wanted reggae first and foremost, and with Bob Marley on the books, Island understandably had other priorities at the time. The record disappeared. Until it reappeared in the early 2000s, as a £700-plus collectors’ item.

It’s barely 30 minutes long. But every single minute is drenched with sinuous, spare funk: no spacey psych rock, no disco, no boogie, no over-the-top production: just 90-110 BPM grooves that go straight to the body.

So: whether you’re a turntablist, a hip hop sampler, or just an honest-to-goodness African Funk lover, catch this limited reissue (with full, updated liner notes) while you can. There won’t be another chance.
