'Eel an' Toe, written by the late Tom Syddall. It's about a bargee and his horse on the Bolton-Bury canal, and Tom always used to explain that the word 'butty' in the context of this song is a Lancashire expression meaning 'friend', and probably gave rise to the American 'buddy'.

'Butty' can also refer to a boat towed by a barge or narrow boat, and to a folded sandwich. Jam Butty also used to refer to a white police car with a red stripe down the side!
