I choose to sample a five second clip of a young man singing a hymn called "The Lord Will Provide", recorded at the end of the 19th century. I was amazed by the strength and clarity of his vowel sounds, and decided to create a simple tune out of them. I cut the vowel sounds out and made various patterns out of them. Since the clip only contains 4 notes, I decided to use pitch bending (as sparingly as possible) to give myself a larger pallet of pitches to work with. I applied a reverb effect to the recording to give it a more "ethreal" feel, which I felt was appropriate since the source material is a song about heavenly benevolence.
