'Goodbye' is the first single from True Sound, the new album from The World of Dust, the musical project of Stefan Breuer, featuring Todd Tobias (Guided by Voices, Robert Pollard, Circus Devils). 

In some ways a concept album, True Sound charts a very personal exploration of the life and death of Stefan Breuer’s grandparents. The unique overarching narrative that plays out with each song, and the warmth of the delivery, unites the album into a moving and consistent whole. As with The World of Dust’s acclaimed previous album, Samsara, the instrumental elements on True Sound were created by Todd Tobias, who sent them to Breuer to write and sing the lyrics. Tobias’s wonderfully melodic compositions call to mind his work with Robert Pollard, creating a haunting marriage when combined with Breuer's pure vocal tones, reminiscent of The White Birch’s Ola Flottum. 

The mesmerising, drumless opening track ‘Sailing’ introduces Breuer’s grandfather, Jan (whose personal effects are on display in the Museum of Vlaardingen), over insistent, metallic guitar and burbling modulation. First single ‘Goodbye’ has a charming, wistful sway and gorgeous vocal harmonies, which belie its sobering story of Jan’s battle with cancer. Jan’s first wife, who passed away during childbirth, is commemorated on ‘Petronella’s Death’, with its elegant, descending guitar figures. And Breuer’s grandmother is touchingly memorialised on the elegant tempo shift and eerie arpeggios of ‘Nel’s Passing’. Ultimately, True Sound is testament to the liberation that comes from letting go.

The World of Dust is Dutch artist, musician and manager of Tiny Room Records, Stefan Breuer, based in Bilthoven, near Utrecht in The Netherlands. Breuer released his debut album, Bhava, in 2013, followed by X in 2014. On 2015’s Womb Realm, Breuer first collaborated with Todd Tobias (Guided by Voices, Robert Pollard, Circus Devils), with Tobias contributing keyboard arrangements. Then, in 2017, Breuer released the experimental compilation Golden Moon. Samsara (2019) is Breuer’s second collaboration with Tobias, and his first release on Hidden Shoal. True Sound (2021) is his latest release, continuing his collaboration with Tobias.

Jeanines' 2019 self-titled debut was an indiepop tour-de-force that drew from a deep set of DIY pop influences, garnering attention from well beyond the international pop underground. Now they're back with "Don't Wait For A Sign," and it's a real gem; shaped by the pandemic, it's deeper and a bit darker than their debut and ultimately even more satisfying. The new single "Who's In The Dark" is 90 seconds of indiepop perfection, hearkening back to everything from 60s folk/sunshine-pop legends Wendy & Bonnie to post-Black Tambourine Pam Berry projects like The Shapiros and The Castaway Stones. Alicia's beautiful vocal melodies wrap themselves around the tune like a honeyed blanket, and the result is supremely beguiling.

Six years on since the release of 2016’s In Search of… album, ex-Panel of Judges frontman and Melbourne-via-NYC luminary Dion Nania returns with Free Time’s third studio album in eight years, Jangle Jargon. 

The album was recorded chiefly in two parts, beginning in 2017 in Ridgewood, Queens, with engineer Jarvis Taveniere (Purple Mountains, The Avalanches, Molly Burch) and guests Martin Frawley and Amy Franz (Twerps, Super Wild Horses) from Nania’s home in Melbourne, Australia. 

After a period of quiet in which he focussed on his academic work, Nania, now living in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Williamsburg, returned to these original sessions in 2021 with a bag of new material and regular collaborators Jonah Maurer and Mike Mimoun. After a while demo’ing new material with Maurer during the pandemic, Nania discovered that he shared an apartment building with engineer John Epperly (Veldt, Daddy Long Legs, Baby Shakes), and so without further ado they booked in time to track new material and mix the 2017 sessions. After a few roadblocks, including Mimoun’s newborn baby Noam arriving the day the album’s tracking sessions were to begin, the band eventually had themselves a record. 

Growing up in the punk and underground scenes in Geelong and Melbourne, Nania was self-taught from an early age. Interestingly, it was his move to the US that sparked a growth in musical theory, prompting him to develop new skills in order to work with new collaborators. Says Dion about his change from the Melbourne underground to New York City - “About ten years ago, when I first came to NYC, I started playing in Craig Dermody’s band (Scott & Charlene’s Wedding). We decided to go to an Underwater Peoples label showcase, we were aware of them because they’d put out the Twerps already. So we went and met those guys who ended up being Free Time’s label for years, and Mike Mimoun from UP joined (Scott & Charlene’s Wedding) on drums, so I got to know him. Then the next year I filled in on bass for a Twerps tour, and through that got to know Jonah Maurer who was touring with us in Real Estate. Then Underwater Peoples asked if I wanted to make a record.”

The band continued over the years, with Dion bouncing between the USA and Australia and collaborating with musicians on both sides of the Pacific. Eight years on and we have Jangle Jargon, ten tracks ranging from the overtly political to the optimistically upbeat and desperately heartbroken, with a healthy dose of jangle jargon in between.

I posted about this the other day, but this is the Christmas-y carol, Oh Holy Night (my childhood fave), that I did for Al Crisafulli’s Signal to Noise show last night on WFDU, it’s his end-of-year one which he modestly bills as the Second-Best Holiday Show on College Radio (pitting himself after Jon Solomon's 25-hour marathon one on the equally wonderful WPRB in Princeton)

I’m only listening now myself - Sunday night was a little...wait, is Sunday only last night? I guess that shows how Sunday night was..

But also putting mine up separately (w/ disclaimer - ha) because, well really just because, since the 10-year-belabored album’s done, it was actually almost fun (almost) to be able to say ‘yes’ to something, to something else, and more importantly, be able to whip through it in two evenings last week (more on that via the link below). In part, I was able to do it quickly (for me) ‘cause I’d already been doing this song in any solo show that fell within like two months either side of the holiday season for years. And admittedly, ‘cause Oh Holy Night was written in 1847, so much of the heavy time-intensive lifting was already done for me (or looked at another way, even this one cover took me 173 years).
