Response to "Call Out My Name" by The Weeknd 

The original song by The Weeknd is a Mega Hit because it is so very well-written and sung with heartfelt emotions. It clearly expresses the way that a man feels about a broken relationship - that his dominance and control are expressions of love; that all a woman has to do to be happy is simply submit to his points of view, his whims and fancies, his “master plan” for life. And that a woman who runs away just does not know how good she has it and is hurting them both by running away from “paradise”. 

So my response song is about a woman’s perspective of such a relationship and the culture of male dominance. One endures a stormy relationship, hoping for calm seas and sunny skies. But the thunder grows louder, the lightning more frequent and the inferno raging even hotter. These are not meant to purify and uplift; they are meant to subjugate and dehumanize - fire begets fire; anger begets anger; rage begets rage; love begets love. 

A lover is not someone who drowns you in rage but one who sails the Seven Seas of Life, sharing the adventure, which uplifts and enriches you both. A lover is not one who tests you but one who trusts you. Love begets Love. If you give anything but Love, do not be surprised when Love leaves you.

‘Call Out My Name’ is a fantastic composition and The Weeknd has once again shown the depth and breadth of his creativity. Wishing lots more success to The Weeknd and his Team💖

ASHIYA is a well-known vocalist from Toronto, Ontario with a passion for entertainment. Her training began in early childhood, with primary education in Indian classical music. She pursued Jazz vocals during her high school career, and was recommended to perform with the Etobicoke Jazz Band, where she performed as a Mezzo and Soprano vocalist for two years. Ashiya proceeded to enrol in York University’s Music program, where she is completing her Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. 

Ashiya's performance career began at the age of 16, and she has performed in numerous venues across the GTA, including the Living Arts Centre, the Hershey Centre, Maple Leafs Garden, The Rivoli and The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar.

Although her passion lies in Jazz, Ashiya is a versatile vocalist who has explored music in English, French, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. Ashiya's performances have drawn comparisons from great talents such as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Freddie Mercury and Whitney Houston. Her repertoire ranges from Jazz and Blues, to Contemporary Rock, Bollywood and R&B. Ashiya has also performed at various conferences and events around Toronto, including the Decolonizing Conference at the University of Toronto, R.I.S.E. Celebration of Black History at York University, the Many Rivers To Cross Photo Exhibit and Celebration of African-Canadian History in Toronto, and the Canadian Mental Health Association. 

Ashiya has been described as a “galvanizing performer”, and continues to perform at private events for music lovers across the GTA.
