Exit to a Quiet World (LP)

Compositions do not truly end when they are recorded. With every year, every season, they take on new shapes, drift into new paths.

The moment music became something we documented, captured, fixed, and archived, we lost a certain freedom: the freedom to return to the melodies we love and let them continue to grow.

I think of melodies as people. Recording a piece of music is like placing a person in a glass case, offering a glimpse, a preserved moment. Some age quickly, some remain iconic. But if we shatter the glass and let them breathe through time, they can gather new motion, new suspenses, new endings, entire worlds formed around them. Some composers dislike this idea, but I don’t believe melodies or harmonies are meant to end within a single work.

What follows are variations and new arrangements drawn from melodies I’ve written or released over the past ten years.

If I could, I would release a new version every day, letting them live differently each time, the way we do as humans.

I walked the long way home.
Every lamp leaned inward,
wanting to see the same thing.
My shadow stayed behind for a cigarette.

Windows glowed like slow blinks.
Somewhere, a bus sighed out its passengers.
Someone laughed.
I missed the timing to join in.

Every corner felt rehearsed.
Even my footsteps seemed borrowed.

There are two streets to every place
the one you walk,
and the one that remembers you leaving.
I take the quieter one.

A stray cat followed halfway.
We didn’t speak of it.
The pavement carried on
with its small, relentless music.

I thought about turning back.
Then I thought about thought.
Then I kept going.

At the corner I forgot
which life I was walking toward.
I kept going,
because what else is there to do with night?

The Quiet World

One lamp,
one breath.
Everything else gone to sleep.
I light the road inside my head
just enough to see regret turn colorless.

The night grows in every direction,
a tide without center.
I hold the lamp higher.
It forgives nothing,
but follows anyway.

You said look up.
I did.
The stars blinked back,
half amused,
half alive.

Mountains in silhouette
too calm to be real.
Wind moves through their teeth,
naming gods we outgrew.

If there’s something beyond this,
it won’t explain itself.
Maybe that’s mercy.

You said look up.
I did,
and everything looked down kindly.

Dawn starts without ceremony.
The lamp dies in my hands.
Still, the path is visible
as if light never belonged to us at all.

I walk into it
smaller, lighter,
unfinished,
but facing outward.

I left the door open too long.

touched everything I couldn’t name.
Dust circled like old prayers,
too quiet to believe in.

Streets crack below,
each car another beat borrowed from your world.
I think of you in the reflection
not your face,
just how still the glass was after you left.

If I’m still somewhere,
it’s between stars,
in the pause between a sound and its proof.
A small, patient sound
forgetting who made it.

I walk until the sky erases the idea of destination.
Billboards speak in light I can’t translate.
The moon flickers,
as if buffering another planet’s thought.
