     Thursday night, I got a text from my brother asking if I had heard about Hans Zimmer's competition (not knowing that I had recently been searching the internet for hours and hours looking for another composition competition to take part in).  I hadn't.  I was freaking out.  I listened to the theme and started thinking.
     The piece is called Another Destiny because of course it is Zimmer's theme recomposed, but also because it sounds like it could portray the feelings surrounding a person meeting their destiny, but the harmonies suggest a different destiny than that described in Zimmer's original work.  It starts out with a string trio, and then, after a sort of brief and upbeat trumpet fanfare, the central theme takes off.  The rest of the piece is lively and energetic, weaving through various styles, meter changes, and tempo changes until the character of our hypothetical film meets his/her ultimate destiny with a resounding chord, at which time the piece slows down, and the story comes to a close.  I used the percussion stem in a couple of places.
     I think it is a fair representation of one of my general styles.  Having said that, I wish I'd had more than a few days to rethink and rework some of the harmonies and tempos I used, along with the various directions I took the music.  2 minutes is a very short time to get out a lot of musical ideas.  It's a little rough around the edges.  It was originally 30 seconds too long, so I had to make a lot of cuts, which stung a lot, but I think it adequately portrays my ability.
     The competition’s main page did not say reorchestrate his composition.  It said "recompose...reimagine...to your heart's content." as well as "originality" and "curveballs". And in giving it some interesting changes in tempo, instrumentation, and harmony, I feel I achieved "originality" and "curveballs".  As for the sound quality, I heard a lot of submissions with fantastic sound!  I hope that my peers (and if I'm soo lucky, the panel) can see past the terrible default MIDI library I have and see the music behind it.  When Bleeding Fingers starts paying me, I would love to get a better library.  However, I was lucky to have the means to overlay actual recordings of some of the strings parts onto the MIDI.
     Thank you soo much to my brother Brad Warren for bringing the competition to my attention and lending me his mic, and to my brother Mckenzie Warren for recording and overlaying some of the strings parts.  I am lucky to have the ability to play and record some of the cello parts, and to have a brother who is a skilled violinist/violist who was able/willing to give his time/energy to record/rock the house for me.  Thank you McKenzie.
     If nothing comes of this competition, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to try for such a dream job.  That I found out about the competition soo late in the game gave me a much more realistic experience, because in the real world (so I'm told), one must compose about a minute of music a day.  And I always enjoy challenges like this that come up and push me to expand my talents and knowledge.
