For my Archaeology and the Public course at Colorado State University I made podcasts on local archaeological sites in Weld County and Larimer County, Colorado. This podcast is about Biscuit Hill, the largest stone circle site in northeastern Colorado. Survey of the site began in 1987 by the Fort Collins chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society. By studying stone circles archaeologists can understand why a site was selected, reconstruct the spatial distribution of activities at a site, and infer how many times a site was occupied. This podcast is about the Kaplan-Hoover bison bonebed. A construction company working on a large housing development west of Windsor, Colorado uncovered the bison arroyo trap in 1997. The developer contacted the Department of Anthropology at Colorado State University and excavations were conducted in 1998 and 1999. The study of subsistence strategies and butchering practices allows archaeologists to reconstruct Late Archaic period bison hunting on the Central High Plains. This podcast is about the Jurgens site. A single radiocarbon date places the Jurgens site in the Paleoindian period. A long-term campsite, short-term campsite, and butchering and processing site represent three different Paleoindian activity areas at this locality. The information gained from excavations at the Jurgens site has enabled archaeologists to study the mobility, subsistence patterns, and tool technology of Paleoindians on the Central High Plains.
