Golden Sun/Shaded Moon, Trentemøller's first release since 2019's Obverse LP, finds him returning to instrumental compositions. It's the newest entry into an ongoing journal of compiled musical case studies exploring suspense and resolution.

As “Golden Sun” rises, we can feel the dew burn off, and our bodies become bathed in warmth. New themes hatch and rise, gravitating towards the song’s leitmotif. Pitches bend, morph, and we recall treasured days, lying somnambulant on a knoll, draped in beams of sunlight, intoxicated both naturally and chemically. As the song sets our eye-lids finally succumb to the weight of sleep, and we dream of a collapsing star.

“Shaded Moon” begins with a sequence of percussive bursts into the great wide yonder, while charged musical particles slowly assemble into an auricular borealis. The peak arrives as if to provide a score for the macrocosm reverting to its ostensible state of chaos, after a brief moment of order. It resolves with layers of pulsating synths, signaling the retreat of perigean tides.

Belfast four-piece Girls Names released their critically acclaimed second album, The New Life, in February and it marked a new direction for the band altogether. That directional shift is emphasized even further by a new EP , entitled The Next Life. Released on 4th November through Tough Love/Slumberland, it will be available in two different formats: a 3 track 12", and as a 7 track download (28th October).

The 12" features a Brain Eno cover version, as above, and two remixes by David Holmes and Factory Floor, is now available to pre-order on exclusive white vinyl through the Tough Love store. A transparent version will be available to buy exclusively via Rough Trade, and a black version at all other stores. The digital EP contains original track 'Visions', and three other remixes: Optimo, Mark Van Hoen, and The Soft Walls.

Girls Names - The New Life (David Holmes Remix)

I created The Blast EP as an experiment in chance. I assembled a collection of different MIDI sequences and routed them to various hardware synthesizers and drum machines in my studio. I triggered these different clips and had a synth open, allowing me to respond and play melodies and bass lines that matched the presented chord progressions, moods, and ambiences. This process was performed live as a loose improvisation on an internet radio app called Blast. Blast is a platform for a community of artists and DJs to stream their performances live, which are then available for 24 hours before disappearing.The initial performance was recorded, and I found a kindred spirit in Aaron Shaw, a remarkable saxophonist. He embellished the 30-minute journey with additional melodies, adding layers of soul and emotion to this piece. Truly meant to be listened to front to back!

Alongside with the release of the new album “Tote Winkel”, Sankt Otten will be delighting us with another limited vinyl bonus release. “Hymnen und Helden” (hymns and heroes) is a collection of cover versions created over the last few years. As the album title suggests, it pays homage to self-proclaimed musical hymns and heroes from the seventies and eighties.


HYMNEN UND HELDEN – track by track:

A well-known Moog sequence leads us on the way into the cover album. Giorgio Moroders 1977 disco classic “I feel love” has been tackled here. Sankt Ottens instrumental interpretation starts out familiar, but ends in a slightly disturbing disharmony of mellotron and ebow guitar.

The instrumental version of the melancholy Wipers anthem from 1983 starts with a rather unusually fast 808 beat for Sankt Otten. The 80s electronic echoes suit the punk rock earworm “Doom Towen” surprisingly well.

Without Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, more unusual electronic music would hardly have been conceivable in Germany in the early 1980s. “Alles ist gut” tribute to this band and singer Gabi Delgado-Lopez, who passed away in 2020 and with whom they shared the festival stage in 2015. Gabi‘s lyrics are rendered by text- to-speech software with the voice of an unknown Claudia.

“Wishing (If I had a photograph of you)” was made famous in 1982 by A Flock of Seagulls. This record was regularly played on Stephan Ottens turntable back then. Reason enough to remember this with “Sehnen (Hät- te Ich von dir eine Fotografie)”. The recordings for this album were made in 2007 and have been updated and completed in the last year. Carsten Sandkämper, who was also featured on Sankt Ottens debut album “Eine kleine Traurigkeit”, contributed the vocals and lyrics.

The Swiss band Grauzone became famous with the NDW hit “Eisbär”. Instead of this title, they took on the B-side of this single with “Ich liebe sie”. A synthpop love song full of innocence, stylishly sung by Carsten San- kämper and refined with Kraftwerk-like choral sounds and an herbaceous motorik beat.

The band has enjoyed a personal friendship with Harald Grosskopf since their collaboration in 2013 on the album “Messias Maschine”. With “So weit, so gut”, they take on his little hit from the album “Synthesist”, which is one of the gems of the synthesizer albums of the eighties.

“Kriegsmaschinen, fahrt zur Hölle” is an anti-war song from 1974 by Günter Schickert, the Berlin master of the echo guitar. Unfortunately, the lyrics are still relevant. Oliver Klemm contributes the delay guitars and Stephan Otten puts the lyrics through a vocoder. Sankt Otten compress the 17-minute original to just under 5 minutes and move it musically from the 70s to the 80s.

Sankt Otten’s adaptation of David Bowies “Heroes” is equipped with warm Juno 106 sounds, ebow guitar and synthesizer pads. The German “Helden” version, known from the movie Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo, is sung in a touching way by Carsten Sandkämper.


New York-based Rafael Anton Irisarri was responsible for mastering of the record. As part of the series with graphic covers, this die-cut artwork was also created by Mexican designer Daniel Castrejon. The one time only vinyl pressing, limited to 350 copies, comes in a beautifully designed die-cut cover and colored vinyl. The Osnabrück duo Sankt Otten, founded in 1999, have been releasing on Denovali since 2009. The band has dedicated itself to the holy trinity of Krautrock, Ambient and contemporary Electronics.

Reissue of the first ISAN album (originally released on Tugboat/RTD in 1998) as a limited Record Store Day first time ever vinyl release! Including previously unreleased bonus tracks. Re-mastered and cut by Dubplates & Mastering.
One explanation for the 90s-fascination with Casio, Korg and other analogue synthesizers is quickly at hand: The 1st video-game generation was coming of age and were happy to hear that their dearly loved “Space Invaders“-soundtrack was suddenly popping up in electronic music. It takes slightly longer to explain why one record from that time - “Beautronics“, the debut by UK-synth-duo ISAN first released in 1998 - kept its appeal until today.
“Beautronics“ does not grab you immediately. You don’t hum these tunes after a few listens, in fact you might not even hum them after dozens of spins. It’s not about humming. It’s about soft cushions and a cosy duvet made of sounds, it’s about aural sheets floating around like warm humidity during a hot bath. Occasionally it’s even about IDM, but in a very late-night kind of way.
Antony Ryan and Robin Saville, the two English lads behind ISAN, are very open about their goals. They separate the longer tracks with short, often abstract pieces they called “Tints“. So it’s as much about tonal colour, as it is about melodies. The “Tints“ form an interesting contrast between ambient sounds and the more focused tunes. But even their most bass-dominated songs such as “Skeek“ are not exactly four to the floor. There’s no more than one to the floor, while the rest is sailing somewhere above in a haze of beautiful sounds and melodies. The album’s sleeve and title are straightforward about this: it’s all about the human beauty in electronica.
Just like your mom’s heartbeat that set the tone for the first nine months of your life, “Beautronics“ produces sounds that radiate a warmth and naturalness that make them feel familiar upon first listen. The 15 years since its initial release don’t change a thing about this. That’s why it’s certain, that “Beautronics“ will win a new generation of listeners with this re-issue.
