The jury decided to award the Third Prize to Asma Ghanem for her sonic venture, ‘Homeland Is…’  The jury thought the artist challenged her own practice by breaking out into a new medium and experimenting in territories outside her comfort zone. The jury was impressed by the idea to render history by means of sound, by the artist’s desire to actively engage the public, and her translation of the score as rhythmical mapping. We are awarding this prize to encourage the artist to continue to pursue this avenue and to delve even deeper into historical research, to engage more actively in field work, and in experimentation with sound synthesis.

ترى اللجنة أن الفنانة تحدت نطاق ممارستها الفنية، عبر الانخراط في وسيط جديد، والتجريب في مواد ومناطق بعيداً عما اعتادت عليه خارج المنطقة المريحة التي تعمل داخلها.  لقد أثارت انطباع اللجنة فكرتها في تقديم التاريخ بوسيلة تقتصر على الصوت، وبرغبة الفنانة في دفع الجمهور إلى التفاعل مع العمل، وترجمتها للمؤلفة الصوتية كخريطة إيقاعية.  إننا نمنح هذه الجائزة، لتشجيع الفنانة لتواصل سعيها، وللخوض أعمق في البحث التاريخي، وللانخراط أعمق في العمل الميداني، والتجريب في بناء الصوت.

مقطع صوتي يركز على توضيح لمعنى (فلسطين)في أحد الأفلام الأمريكية -انتاج هوليوود 
حيث يقوم الأب بشرح الكلمة و التي تطلق على الأشخاص و تعني الشخص الجاهل -التافه 
 الذي لا يقرأ و ليس لديه حس الاهتمام بالفنون كالسينما و الأفلام و غيرها وبالتالي هو الشخص 
الذي يعيش بلا هدف في الحياة, أي ياكل و ينام و يتنفس 
من خلال التركيز على المقطع الصوتي و العمل عليه رغم ظهور الأب كشخص يساري ,مثقف
الا أنه يدخل أو يندرج تحت المنظومة الأمريكية-الصهيونية بحيث أصبح التعبير عن كلمة تحمل صفة و هي أيضا 
تعبر عن شعب بأكمله و بالتالي تندرج تحت المنظومة اللغوية وهي بالأصل بشرية طبعا و عليها العديد من التساؤلات 
و منها هذا التفسير أيضا ,و هو يعتبر من الاسهامات الصهيوأمريكية في تبرير الوجود اليهودي متمثلا في دولة اسرائيل 
على أرض فلسطين 
A sound piece focusing on clarifying the definition
of "philistine" inside a hollywood film.
According to the father in this film, this word is applied
on people who are ignorant, do not read, and are not interested
in arts.. people who live with no purpose except to
eat, sleep, and breathe.
After concentrating on the speech, one notices that besides
the fact that the father appears to be an intellectual leftist,
he is living under an american-zionist system. The word "philistine"
seems to represent the mentality of the same system and is very
questionable. This word
has been used by American-zionism to justify the state of Israel's existance on 
Palestinian land.

where is the rifle? from the Egyptian Film (The Innocent) mixing with a bombing sound from a Syrian film about about zionism's arrival to colonize Palestine and the ethnic cleansing and murder which has taken place afterwards, hence the usage of a scene containing explosives and screams. this piece accompanies electronic sounds without ending, a kind of hallucination, which Asma related to the action of running during struggle, in similarity to the current situation of Palestine with under perpetual occupation .

موسيقى الخط المستقيم , عودة الى مصطلح (الخط المستقيم) في مادة الرياضيات حيث يعرف بأنه خط بلا نهاية ولا بداية , وهو ما استوحيت منه هذه الموسيقى التي لا أعرف اذا ما كانت تسمى بالموسيقى الا أنها نوع من التجريب الصوتي الذي يعطي مدى للتفكير وليس خلق موسيقى من أجل الموسيقى ,بل التعرض لمصطلح الموسيقى نفسه ووضعه في جدلية امكانيته لاستيعاب الأصوات الطبيعية أو المتشكلة ضمن سياق معين يخلق نوع من الايقاع الصوتي ,
وهو ما جعلني أيضا أن أسميها (البحث عن المتاعب) ,..... أسمى

Asma Ghanem is a Palestinian visual artist & experimental musician, born in Damascus-Syria(1991). She has a B.A. from The International Academy of Arts-Palestine & M.A. degree in Audio-Visual Arts from ISDAT(École supérieure des beaux-arts de Toulouse)in France. Asma has participated in exhibitions, residencies and workshops in Italy, Germany, France, Austria, USA, Lebanon, UAE, Norway, Jordan and Palestine and was awarded the 3rd prize in the YAYA (The Young Artist Award- The Hassan Hourani Award, 2016)for her experimental music project (Homeland is…). She was also awarded a special mention in the Palest’in & out Festival in Paris in 2015 for her Photography project. Asma participated as a Fellow in OneBeat 2017 global music exchange, a U.S. State Department initiative managed by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation that each year brings outstanding individual musicians from around the world to the U.S. for four weeks of collaborative creation, performance, and engagement with communities.
