Parisian artist Assalm is back with his second album, “Slay”. Ten brand new original tracks blending elements of Electronica, Techno and dark Electro with the characteristic deep and atmospheric sound the French artist established in his debut album “Rivera”. While his debut though followed a more playful approach by even adding elements of Trap into the mix, Assalm’s sophomore album takes a more minimal and stripped down direction. The LP opener “Midnight” will immediately catch the listener’s attention with its atmosphere before the heavy hitters “Oblast” and “Valkyrie” kick in to get the blood pumping and set the mood for the rest of “Slay”. This is definitely Assalm’s most mature and complete outing to date but then again that’s probably only going to last until his next release. Either way, enjoy!

The latest edition of our free download series welcomes @assalm. After his track "Angel", he created a new free download called "Crusader".

trndmsk: What inspired you to produce the track?

Assalm: I wanted to create a dynamic contemporary sound, while using at the same time mix between traditional eastern instruments and vintage synthesizers. For me it s aiming to provide new life to these instruments and more sincerity to the track. Its title, "Crusader" puts a spell on this opposition between the sounds which were used in this track. They may seem contradictory due to their origins (one is middle eastern and the other occidental) but are finally matching pretty well in terms of sound. A short comparison can be made with the Crusades which were opposing eastern and western groups, resulting to some chaos but at the same time to some interesting religious and cultural encounters. Having spent myself years of my life in both oriental and western countries I felt pretty inspired. 

Where did you record it?

I recorded it at my home studio in Paris as most of my tracks. Its private environment allows me to completely dedicate myself to the process of creation. I recorded a friend of mine who plays the Duduk, an instrument coming from the Middle East mainly and added a touch of the ARP 2600 as a layer in the background. This vintage synth btw is amazing, a lot of electronic musician will agree on this point, most of the layers of the track come from it. 

Why do you want to provide it as a free download?

I create music to share my feelings of the moment with others. Music is for me a way of communication, and that’s why it s important when it s distributed and heard by many. Providing it as a free download, is a chance to create a link with new people who hear the world the same way as I do.

What’s up next after the release? Are you working on any other projects?

I never stop creating new music and work on new projects, it s inseparable from my everyday life. So, you can be sure to hear more of my tunes soon. I have some upcoming techno tracks ready to be shared in a near future.
