“Mask” is a collaboration between Detroit producer songwriter Nigel Van Hemmye (aka “Nydge”) and indie-folk artist Greater Alexander. The two first met while delivering pizzas together, but it took years for them to try blending their distinctly different sounds in the studio. After some initial frustrations trying to create together, a joint meditation mid studio-session gave birth to a track that is as haunting as it is introspective and hopeful. Between the electronic pulsations of Nydge's synth-heavy production, Greater Alexander’s elusive lyrics beckon the listener to discard the false identities they embody as the result of social pressure and expectations. “Mask” is the first single released by us this year as part of our annual Sunday Songs series, a series that features collaborative songs written at their Detroit church studio and peer reviewed by their community of resident artists in meetings that are meant to mimic Motown’s legendary “quality assurance” meetings.
